Quirky M5

Hello All! I picked my M5 up in Germany in April of 2018. I had one of the ones that shut off intermittently at inopportune times, but a SW fix took care of that. Had the fuel sensor float recall as well. Passenger restraint sensor was also another minor issue that was fixed. I see those as fresh off the line issues.
About 6 months ago, I had the fuel gage go to E and the fuel light go on. I filled it up, but with only say 4-5 gallons, so I knew something was up. I took it in, and there "was a loose wire" that fixed it but now, it seemed like when I would start it up, it would come on then right off again. I would start it again and no issues. It was inconsistent and I took it back in. It needed 2 fuel pumps! It was good for a while, but it will still stop once in a while right after it turns over. I am taking it back to BMW, and they will investigate it, but for a car I love so much, it sucks to be as quirky as this is. In addition, there has been no mechanical tune to this car at all. Bone stock, outside of radar detector and tinted windows. (That damn detector is all the problem I bet)
I have lurked on here and have not seen any specific fuel pump issues, but for a car that barely has 10,000 miles on it, I cant figure it out other than chalk it up to it being a higher performance German car, but I have had other cars in the same vein and not nearly the issues.
As much as I love the car, I do own it outright and there is no other car I really want, except maybe a 2020 Porsche Turbo or GT3, but that is down the road. It is a great vehicle for a daily driver, and I am thinking that about 6 months in front of the warranty ending, I might be taking time to itemize all the issues and see where I stand with it. If it is all minor, it is probably still a keeper, but if more "failures" happen, it may be a trade in. Anybody else have similar issues or quirks in their M5?

That's a case for a buyback or your service center is severely incompetent.

No new car, no matter the cost should have that many issues during the first 10k miles of ownership.

I'd explore a new service center and see where you land soon

My March 2018 build is currently getting a new fuel pump and instrument cluster due to a CEL (PO462) that came on a week ago. 6 months ago, the electronics in my fuel tank were replaced. Maybe the early builds have an instrument cluster issue that manifests itself as a fuel pump issue. I might be the first car they are trying to cure by replacing the instrument cluster??

Too weird. I have recently noticed mine cut off right after starting it twice in the last two weeks. Restarted it and no problems. I will watch how this goes for you, will be interested to see what BMW tells you.

Same here ... it has happened once or twice in the last month or so; restarted right away and really didn't think about it again until now.

You’re so right! It’s been so hot the last week or so that I only go outside when I have to. I love FL but I truly hate this time of year.

Now, all we need is a hurricane to blow through to cool things down! j/k

You may be right with that heat! I see you are from SRQ too. I do believe it could be the heat and vaporization of some sort, but Lets have them run it through the scope and see. I will keep you posted!

Quirky F90 M5C

I feel your pain, my trunk lid has tried to decapitate me several times, finally had the feature removed. Then/now on my third set of brakes on a bone stock car that has never seen a track day.

I’m going to miss it but “its gotta go”. Life’s far to short to put up with what “should be” the baddest sedan on the planet.

You could always try aftermarket pads. I have had no big problem with mine so far and do consider it the baddest sedan on the planet.

Quick update... I took the car in on a scheduled visit to have them really look it over. No faults stored in the DME, EGS or BDC. Full diagnostics reports sent to BMW in Germany and waited for response. They came back with replace the low pressure fuel pump, and as a precaution, make sure that next 2 fill ups are with Zero ethanol gasoline. It is good to have the car back, and hopefully this will be the end of it all. Was hoping to keep this car for a while!
Will check back in if anything to the contrary occurs.

Will be interested to see if new fuel pump resolves the problem. I have had it happen a couple more times. Always on a really hot day. Kind of annoying to have to restart it but not annoying enough yet to take it in.

Is it happening while driving or solely at startup?? It happens to me here and there but only at startup. Random and infrequent ....

Its happening to me only at startup and like you, its random and infrequent. I would think a fuel pump problem would be more pronounced and frequent but I am not a mechanic. It was said in earlier post it was a low pressure fuel pump problem so maybe there are low and high?

Not sure if you are buy or lease, or if it matters, but I went the buy route with the M5 and would like to keep it for a while, even off warranty, so I am probably a little over-cautious with it in regards to service. There were 2 high pressure pumps replaced about 6 weeks ago and it remedied the problem for the most part, but still once in a while it would stop right after ignition. The cost to rplace the HP pumps was about $4700.00 so, yeah, I am glad under warranty, and I will be keeping an eye on this .

I see Need for Speed is in Sarasota too! I think I have seen yours as well as a Full Black F90 in town too.

I have a 2018 M5 that has had intermittent warnings regarding the passenger restraint malfunction. While my car was in service for a tire replacement, the BMW technician noted the same warning notification. The report I received from the dealer service department states the reason for the malfunction is “moisture”. Has anyone had luck with a repair for the same issue?

First year bugs need to be worked out, small concession for such a versatile beast!
