What is this thing in the center console?

I saw this the other day, and it looks like its as if you lay your phone down on it, it will automatically charge your phone wirelessly. Like one of those new charging pad's they sell. But it does not. Anyone know what the purpose of this thing is?

Because the iPhone 8 was the first generation to support wireless charging.

I never ever use it... I have a cig lighter 3.0 fast charger than runs circles around it. Plus I like to be able to see my phone and swipe so its mounted via one of those little magnets on the vent. The charger, for me, is worthless.

Ditto.. I go from 50% to 85% in a 15 minute drive to work. Suits my needs perfectly except in one area. I know it's supposed to chime when you turn off the car with the phone in the charger, but many times I fail to hear it and leave the car w/o my phone! Small third-world problem, I know.

I use it, don't know about how fast it charges though. I like it but at times, I just keep the phone in my pocket and don't bother.

I use it with my X and a apple leather case and it seems like it charges 3x slower than just plugging it in.

Same here. By the time I get home from work (30 mins to an hour - depends on the day) my phone is fully charged (iphone XS). And this is while using it with Apple carplay for pandora, calls etc.

What's not to love about it? The charge rate could be faster thats all.

Not sure if applicable to your situation but some of the thicker phone cases reduce the induction charge strength (increases distance between emitter and reciever) thus making the wireless charger useless

thanks for this, sadly my phone wont fit with the case I have (note 8) so its free charging (no case) when I tried it... its just not a fast charger. (maybe its the samsung?)

The wireless chargers are always slower than plugging in, but the one in the car seems to be as fast as they other wireless chargers I have around my house, and plenty fast enough to be useful on a drive longer than 15 minutes.

I have an iPhone 6 with a case that has an extra battery and wireless charging capability, bought off Amazon for $39.95. Works great in the wireless charging pad of my M550i. Highly recommended for older iPhones. Just google it.
