Please don't sully the time honored Touring name by claiming iNext belongs there. It's an SUV no matter how you look at it.

I agree, there are many people toying with buying electric but are turned off by three things, firstly they want a good looking car, not necessarily a “futuristic design concept” secondly electric cars should not be at a premium, yes batteries cost but so do all the parts manufacturers do not have to fit in an electric only vehicle. Finally, the big one, the range on most electric vehicles sucks and Politicians are stupid, for electric vehicles there should be ONE charging standard (with selectable power levels) and everyone should be encouraged to install charge stations. Allowing Tesla to have Tesla only charging stations is flawed legislation.

In the U.K an even bigger joke is that we will not have enough power to supply homes in a few years time, let alone the thousands of compulsory electric vehicles. Still, U.K politicians are probably the worst in the world, too busy virtue signalling, social engineering and ignoring the wishes of the actual voters.

Now, the sound - it was not there but honestly I keep open mind and accept it as innovation and that's how it does thing. I did not mind the lack of exhaust while in i8.

Lack of gearbox, I actually think they might come up with some gear shit there just from seeing how electric is inefficient on high speeds. However, in my testing of i8 I had zero concerns with lack of the stick.

I8 is not i4, i know that. I4 will probably be more in line with model 3. Also i8 has horrible steering. It was probably in comfort mode but boy it felt I was driving my kid toys... I think i4 will have better steering given the tech progress since my test drive.
Well that's the problem.

No exhaust or no shifting. No fun as a fun car. Ok for a commuter.

BEVs are a lot of fun, even simple ones like the i3. You won't miss shifting and definitely won't miss exhaust (neither will the car in queue behind you lol).

And to those complaining about electricity power. If we all switch to BEVs it will require quite a lot LESS electricity than making ICE fuel. So, more BEVs means less energy required.

Sold my last ICE car in 2016. Only regret I didn't switch even earlier haha

A "lot" of fun? I will have to disagree. My old boss had a Model S that he was smitten with, but I didn't see what the fuss was all about. Whenever he'd take us out for lunch in it, he would hit the accelerator pedal and it would push my stomach back for a couple of seconds, but after it was over, I would thinking to myself, "Okay.. what was the point of that? Just risking our lives for nothing." And I do mean nothing... no sound, no emotion, no anything. Just the faint whining sound of the motors and that was it.

Now, my M240i on the other hand! I took it out the other day, found a nice sweeping curve where traffic wasn't present, and I must have U-turned a half dozen times to do it over and over again. Hearing the noise of the B58 and watching the revs climb on the tach left me laughing in my own car by myself just like Dr. Evil finding a new way to take over the world.

They really can't compare, but for daily comfort driving, sure, I'll take a BEV.

600 KM (372 miles) range on the I4 would FINALLY make BMW a real EV contender! Glad to see BMW finally getting their range deficiency sorted out! Can't wait!

Yes this analogy is profound as just like Dr Evil frozen in space for 30yrs returning and the value of 1milion has changed so drastically so to will 30yrs from now the AI operation of cars on a grid. Leaving the M240 to recreational use much like Horseback riding is used in today's world.

Live today as tho these cars will be seen as the best of times by future enthusiasts, Joy of driving indeed. Joy of riding lacks all validity.

Agree, with that kind of range one can actually travel intermediate distances, making it possible to own a BEV as an only vehicle without major shortcomings

The Model Y is an even bigger problem for BMW and the rest of the entire car industry.

It's really alarming to see how slow BMW truly is... Where is the 330e PHEV?
I'd rather see bmw take their time to get the car right instead of producing and selling cars like Tesla did with the Model 3 with tons of issues due to seemingly half baked software

Electric will always be boring besides the 0-60 sprint. However, 350+ mile range is definitely the right direction. That's very impressive and that should be extremely competitive.

As opposed to the hideous i3 which is, today, the only affordable electric car BMW makes?

I hope bmw just makes "normal" looking vehicles already in their lineup with electric powertrains. This futuristic look they are applying to them right now is just ugly.

called the i4 and not the i3 so they can charge a premium and not confuse people into thinking this vehicle should compete with the model 3.

They are going to price it closer to the model S. let's all be realistic here. This is BMW. with that range and 0-60, its not meant to compete with the model 3. BMW wants to be seen as better, hence the i4 name..

expect it to cost 65k+ (before options)

Good to see these all new electric vehicles looking normal.
Not like the i3 that was horrid looking.
However, BMW did away/sold the Carbon factory in the U.S.

The Model 3 is far from half baked software wise. It blows away pretty much every car on the market on the software front. Yes there are issues with the Model 3 (my issues were purely cosmetic), but i've had far more issues with my X1, X5, and 3 series than my Model 3 over the same time period. I'm rooting for both companies and hope they both succeed on the EV front.

Tesla Model 3P: 0-60= 3.2 Sec...

BMW is looking very stupid right now.

Tesla is absolutely changing the market.

It's a great car, so don't knock it until you try it.

Let's see BMW offer continuous improvements via, over-the-air-updates, like Tesla does.

It's called i4 because it's the electric version of the next generation 4 series. Naming a car based on the nomenclature of a competitor is dumb.

i4 will not compete with Model 3 Performance. If i4 60 sDrive drives better than Model 3 SR RWD that will be enough. If i4 80 xDrive drives better than Model 3 LR AWD that will be enough.

Now that is truly a big point for Tesla. I was burned with my 2016 F31 whose iDrive 4 became obsolete less than a year later, even though iDrive 5 used the same exact hardware. With Tesla no such buyer remorse.

I guess we'll have to wait and see.

BMW is losing a ton of sales to Tesla until they actually start delivering.
