Not just you. It's always been scripted, but it's not even entertaining anymore. Their homepage is a joke as well, feels like it's intended for teenagers.

The entertainment value clearly exceeded the scientific value of a head to head test drive. And that's perfectly fine. My preference for M5 hasn't been affected in any way.

Smells Fishy!!!

This is unfair and disappointing, Chris Harris should've compared E63s with M5c, for him to say, it wasn't available or announced during the shooting of this film is BullShit, M5 Competition was announced and arrived almost at the same time as M5. And it's not like they filmed it as soon as M5 came out, so they had time, and during that time M5c must've come out, but anyway Chis Harris was always BMW fan, I remember he bought e92 M3 in White when it came out, and since then, he was always BMW kind a guy, even says at the beginning of the film that he's biggest M5 fan, so what has changed? It's not like E63s is massively better than M5, they're equally matched and at the end of the day, it's about matter of taste, so I think something fishy going on in BBC...

E63 passed m5 way too easily, as said before. Advertisement stage. Harris has been promoting e63 wagon for months now so no surprise there. M5 is track king, and still faster in straight line.
With a shown head start that stig got no way merc could even close that gap realistically. Unless it was the car detail guy in stig's suit

It's the first time I watch the new Top Gear. I don't own any of those car, no bias but it's obviously scripted. It's not even funny. The mighty Stig loses to a guy just like that with a similar performance car :.

I wonder if BMW. Had given Harris a long term M5 like Merc did with the E63 would the outcome have been different?

Purely made for entertainment and not a real race, who drifts around the corner like that in a real race? :

Harris leased the E63, Mercedes did not give him. And this review was filmed before he picked up the Merc. It was filmed an year ago

I know these cars are capable around a track, but who does that? These things are over 4000 pounds and are so stuffed with luxury and technobloat that it seems pointless.

So it doesn’t really bother me to see silly drifty Chris Harris videos. It’s all in fun anyway, nothing about a comparison like this is remotely serious.

0-60 and 1/4 mile are all that really matter, IMO. These are vehicles that look and feel like a proper luxury car but are able to embarrass nearly every one if you felt like giving a lesson. They can take you from point A to B as fast as possible, completely effortlessly with unending power. That’s pretty much the point.

I picked the one that I thought looked better.

Don't believe everything you see!

As others stated:
  • it's a scripted race
  • there are other comparisons on the net where the regular M5 beats the E63s
Since Chris Harris joined Top Gear I lost all interest in his reviews. Thus if right now I'd like to know the opinion of someone about a car it's the opinion of Mat Watson I listen to.

I totally see why Harris would take the E63S over an M5. In fact I can see why a lot of people do. There is 2 sides to the story. If I was buying a luxury barge sports sedan for weekend use mainly and aggressive driving, I would take the E63 too. It feels more racy, it sounds racier, it has less body roll, etc (comparing E63 S to M5, which is what we get in Brazil).

But I wanted a complete all rounder that had 90% of the thrill of the E63, with a third of the drawbacks. Therefore I own a M5

Yes sir and as an owner of both you know I feel the same way. The fluid driving experience of the F90 outweights the raw racy feel of the E63S. Im also very very very old and need soft seats.

It's so nice to see you old folks broadening your outlook and acknowledging modern-day greats like DareDevil; golf !

I jumped between these two cars almost as quickly as Vic did and I haven't looked back (or forward it seems given my recent accident rate). The E63S' interior trumps the M5 on looks but not on functionality. It's the same for the driving experience: when you really get down to it, the M5's driving manners and limits are superior and, to me, far more easily enjoyed.

There is another top gear episode where Chris Harris discusses his reasoning behind choosing the E63S. He did a thorough test of both cars and the scripted race is a result of which car he felt was better.

The race itself really had nothing to do with the results which is what most here don't understand.

Completely agree.
Also agree that the M5 is the more capable car in handling and in acceleration.

Merc has never matched BMW for chassis tuning. They have come damn close several times (W204 vs E9x, W205 vs F8x, W213 vs F90, etc), but Mercs are almost always harsher riding, and less grippy. The M5 is a far more acessible car when driving fast, but it is also a little more capable. Nevertheless, I love driving the E63 S hard as well. And that bloody exhaust. I have Akrap on my M5, and I still think that the E63 S exhaust stock, trumps mine.
