The BMW M4 GTS factory time was 7:28, nine seconds faster than Supertest time for the same car. That's a big difference, leading me to think the M5 CS factory time will easily best the GT 63S factory time.

This did confirm that the CS was on Corsa tires. It would be great if the magazine could run an M5 Comp LCI on Corsa tires. With the updated suspension (which I think is the same as on the CS) and the stickier tires, I wonder if the LCI Comp would make up all or most of the 6.5 seconds the older Comp was behind the CS on the 'ring.

Yeah, Sport Auto only does two laps on the ring for the superset, one warm up and one timed lap. A factory driver would have far more laps and can be selective with track conditions.

With that said, the SA ring driver is pretty good and is usually within 3 seconds of factory times.

Possible, CS is only 48kg lighter than the CP, given stickier tires the gap would be close. But SA never does comparison test on the ring nor repeat with same car on different tires, so we can only speculate.

Porsche end Mercedes seem far more intent on using factory times in their overall marketing strategy than BMW.

True, however, the Porsche factory times and Sport Auto times are VERY close and nearly the same. I think the Panamera turbo S just did the Ring in 7:28 so to see the M5 not far behind is definitely impressive. Though I do believe the Panamera has far less HP overall.

Sure

1. Car go fast in straight line

3. Car looks good in straight line
4. Car looks good in corners
5. Go car go

I think that does it.

I'd have expected the M5 CS to beat the Panamera time. The sports auto test for the M4 GTS is 9 seconds slower than the factory time, so the same could happen, given the factory drivers can test the track more than once. We'll have to see... it's looking more and more like BMW will not release the factory time.

Put another way - the sports auto time for M5 CS is better than the M4 GTS by 7 seconds - so the factory time may be similarly better - leading to a time in the 7:21 range for the CS.

All just speculation of course.

They quote the 676hp against the official 635ps saying it's 41hp more so it's a crank number they are quoting.

At 676ps at 6190 / min, the measured power is 41ps or 6.5 percent above the factory specification

I think that's a point. I don't know honestly.. but I guess the Nuremberg times speak to the ability to track it with quantifiable results. I'm not super impressed w the time myself.. but I guess considering that it's a heavy ass m5 it's good.
