Helmets?

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Anyone have recommendations on where to get a good deal on SN rated helmets? Any good advice on how to pick the perfect one? Too many options and price range varies wildly... I’ve been out of the autox/open track scene for awhile but want to get back into it w the M5! My old g force was always a crap helmet and it’s way too old...

Thanks!

I went to the local Cycle Gear store. I was able to get one sufficient for the CCA HPDE requirements at a very reasonable price.

Helmet shopping sucks because most shops just don't carry a wide variety. Best bet is to ask the guys at the track where they got theirs. Hopefully you can find a shop that has a decent selection because the fit varies significantly by brand. You definitely want to try on a few before buying one.

I have a full face RaceQuip from 2010 which I bought from Summit Racing because they had the lowest price at the time. I didn’t even do a trial fit on it, but it’s been fine, fits my head shape. When I was riding motorcycles I was very particular about the brand and the features. Riding for 6 hours or more at a time with the wind and buffeting on the bike demands the best fit you can get and I'm pretty sure the RaceQuip wouldn't be adequate.

But for the car and track sessions that may be a half hour or less, to me the fit isn’t nearly as critical. You’re out of the wind, in the M5 anyway, and as long as the helmet is snug you should be fine. Snell 2020 is available, don’t let anyone stick you with an earlier Snell rating. RaceQuip is probably on the low end of the helmet quality ladder, but if it has the Snell rating why pay two to four times the price for a helmet you’ll use only a few hours a week?
