Weistec S63 Billet Oil Filter Housing
Weistec S63 Billet Oil Filter Housing
Has anyone tried this? Seems like it would save the hassle of spilling oil onto the metal panel surrounding the oil filter housing since the oil filter can hold a decent amount of oil, enough to make a mess (or at least I did). It would also make torquing down the filter housing easier since a filter wrench or tool is not required, only need a standard socket. The billet aluminum would be stronger than the plastic I imagine and the anodized red looks quite good IMO. |

I have this billet oil cap on my F10 M5 and love it! It works perfect makes spills a thing of the past. I'll be trading in the M5 in on the F90 M5 and I'll be switching it over for sure. The plastic cap has the same PN for both the F90 & F10

The Weistec piece is overpriced, but since no one else makes it and I plan to keep the car for many years, it was worth it to me. It’s very well made, but $199……? |

Yeah it's way overpriced, but I'm loving the idea of having the drain plug at the bottom of the housing. It'll make my life easier in the years to come for sure.

Can anyone tell me the size of the socket needed to loosen and tighten this thing? I had the dealership put it on at my last free oil change, and I'll be doing my own from now on. I assume it's a large metric size?

In case anyone wants to know, I discovered that the socket size for the Weistec billet aluminum filter housing is 32mm. The central drain plug is 6mm hex.

I bought one on sale for $188 plus $22 shipping earlier this year after doing my first oil change at 30k miles (18 CPO bought with 24k). Pretty messy so I bought the cap after that. Just installed it today at 36k miles. Next change will hopefully be less messy.
The only trick with the install is to pry the filter receiver out of the stock cap and press it into the Weistec cap. Note that the labeled end if the filter faces down — into the cap. Maybe I will remember to post again at 42k miles after I see whether the cap drain plug helps reduce the mess. Probably about that time I will also change the other fluids — trans, front and rear diffs, brake, power steering, coolant. CPO might cover it but I prefer to keep my car out of the dealer’s hands unless I have no other option. |

oem oil filter check valve
Took to dealer for oil change and they tried to use Weistec , but could not get the oem check valve out of stock cap. they were worried it would break the oem filter cap. Does anyone know how to get the check valve out of oem cap and does it fit into Weistec?

Yes, it comes out of the stock filter housing and snaps into the Weistec. Gentle pulling force should pop it loose.

When I pulled that piece out I was not sure whether it would break or not. The tech was likely concerned and did not want the liability. Not sure if it is available separately from BMW or whether you have to buy the whole filter cap.

I don't know if it's available separately. From my experience, the dealership tech removed it from the stock cap and placed it into the Weistec for me with no issues. Also, when I recently changed my oil, that piece pulled out of the housing with the old filter, so I had to separate it and place it back into the Weistec before I put the new filter in. It was not damaged, so I know it comes out. It just snaps into the bottom of the housing, whether stock plastic or aluminum Weistec.

When I pulled my filter from the stock plastic holding, the filter retainer did not come out. Have not changed the oil since I installed the Weistec, but I recall a similar piece popping out of other BMW plastic oil filter housings so probably if it pops out if the Weistec, that is OK.

Dealer did have a cap in inventory, $71.20 that includes the check valve, claimed you cannot buy check valve alone. On my next oil change I will have them try and remove check valve and if it breaks, I will use cap in inventory and be out $71.20. I did not have any oil spills after first oil change, second oil change pooled oil in my garage, this, the third oil change no pools of oil. Second oil change must have been a sloppy mechanic.

You can put paper towel or rags around the sides and clean up afterwards, but after doing that twice, I installed the Weistec cap. Unless you open the cap drain the night before so as much as possible will drip out, I would still expect some dripping from the upper part of the housing that remains attached to the motor. Should be much less to clean up, though.
I agree you had careful techs twice and one who did not really care once. The oil spilled onto the sheet metal subframe reinforcement plate, pooled up and dripped out as you drove and after you parked. You have to wipe it off the sheet metal plate right away but space is tight so it is a pain and the quickie tech might not bother. |
