Flat Tire.....snows go on early I guess....

Nice flat......nice road debris.....I guess the snows go on early.

I was driving home from the ER and got a low tire warning, pulled over in the dark, in the rain, on the highway, and could hear the hissing over the sound of the running car.

I am going to try to plug it this weekend and get the last few miles out of these tires. I think the hole is not just a round hole, but a slit, so likely not pluggable. I'll know when I pull the metal thing out.

I have a new set of tires already in the garage and planning on a remount over the winter at my leisure while the snows are on.

From that angle, tread looks pretty low on your summers. Good move switching to winters.

You all must be seeing snow this morning up in Binghamton, no? Not like it will stick but just curious. All rain in Central NJ.

Same here in NYC... I'm taking in to get the 1200 service in a few weeks, and I'll switch to winters then.

Did you or has anyone actually used the mobility kit? If you use it, can you still plug the tire later?

Its snowing now in Westport, CT. I put my snows on last week and drove a bit this morning. Loving the Michelin Alpins...

I did not use the mobility kit, just drove slow and refilled at a gas station and drove up the hill.

Too soon for snows, dam it......alas they are going on.....

and there is PLENTY of tread left, I like slicks.

Funny story.....it was the winter and took my RS6 in for inspection as it as due for NYS inspection. It was failed because the tires were too warn. I was very busy that year and had neglected to check the thread height. The snows were completely, COMPLETELY, slick. LOL. I was wondering why I was having trouble driving in to the parking lot up a tiny grade in the snow. I just assumed there was ice on the ramp by the gate. Nope, my tires were BALD. LOL.

I have the new tires already and was going to have them mounted this winter. So it's just a few weeks early but ok.

The big question is Buy out Lease or Turn in in May. If turn in then I'll turn in with the snows on it and sell the new tires.

No issue with returning lease with snows instead of summers it was delivered with? Or do they just want acceptable tread left on any tire.

Snows are on, took 25 minutes.

Here is the culprit. There is no plugging that tire, the cut is a slit about 2 cm across. And the tread bars are half gone.

And the summers are done so the timing of this road hazard was about perfect, three more weeks would have been perfect.

The snows are squishy but ok.

And....WTF....my brake pads are all about 3/8 to 1/2 inch thick still after 30 k miles. So that's good.

That's a big piece of metal but you may be able to get it repaired if using a vulcanising method.
I got a screw right on the edge of my rear and it could still be repaired, 30 instead of 250 for a new tyre (UK prices) which would mean 500 as I would get an axle set.
The wheel/tyre needs to be left with the repairer for a day as they need to grind out the damaged area and remould in plies in a jig and heat treat then smelt the rubber back and cut the tread and it will be pretty much as strong as original.
I've done this with a couple of tyres over the years - even RFTs are OK to do (if not been driven on when flat).

That repair is COOL!!!!!

I have plugged tires myself 3 or 4 times and never had an issue. Those were nail holes not a slit LOL. My summer tires are spent anyway, so it's time to put the new rubber on. I have a set already to go. The front tires probably have some life left but oh well.

The place take it to is a bit out of my way and the repair costs double than a standard one.
But they can pretty much repair anything. A normal tyre place would not even consider repairing my tyre as it's too close to the sidewall. I've seen JCB tyres with pipes sticking through them the thickness of my arms going through the shop! It costs 200 to repair but that is still only 1/10 a new one.
I was happy to pay 30 for my repair 😀 as the F90 M5 is a heavy powerful car and I want the tyre to be as strong as original else I would just replace and it would be a waste as they're only 50% worn and due to covid19, I've only done 300 miles since April so they will last me ages at this rate!

Same wheels. They don't look at tire type. As long as there is enough thread.
