Roof bars (and rear bike rack option)
I am looking to order some roof bars and bike carriers to go on top of my new X1.
Has anyone bought the BMW bars / bike carrier or tried any of the Thule etc bars and bike options on their X1? I did not want to pay for the towbar and bike rack option as it was £1k for the pair and I just couldn't justify that on top of the other options. The local BMW dealership has quoted me £384 for roof bars and 2 bike carriers so I'm looking for any experiences that you may collectively have. Thanks in advance for any input. One quick update - I was looking through the BMW web site for some prices and I was trying to find the cost of a rear bike carrier.
On the X1 factory options list you can have for £600 "Towbar, detachable" but for £160 "Bike Rack Preparation". Now my dealer told me that I needed both of these options to be able to have the bike rack on the back of the car - hence I said "No way!" as this with the cost of the rack itself made it a £1k option. But having looked at it this morning, I 'think' you only need to have the £160 "Bike Rack Preparation" to have ability to mount the bike rack. It reads as though it gives you a towbar fitting but that it doesn't have the capacity to pull anything big, simply take the weight of the bike rack and the bikes. If I had known this to be the case then I certainly would have added this option - but I think I got the wrong info from the dealer on this one. Has anyone added this option, or does anyone know the correct answer to what options you need to have the rear bike rack? |

Although for 2 carries and the bars it's €378 which is certainly cheaper than buying in sterling. I think though that the shipping costs would be too high to buy these in Euros and then ship them to London. Thank you for looking though. |

Hi Toby I have the bike rack preparation. (I purchased a pre reg and it was already optioned). Bike rack prep comprises of the electrics (swing down fitting) and a bracket which I think only fits the £600 BMW bike rack. I usually put my bike in the car, however I already have a Thule 3 bike rack the same as the BMW offering but has a conventional ball towbar fitting. I am thinking of investigating if some sort of conversion can be done to the bracket mounting on the car . I suspect not.

To add to the list of questions here.
I have a US spec X1 here in Germany currently. Would the bike rack preparation and detachable tow bar for the UK/Euro spec X1's fit onto a US spec vehicle? I am not sure why but the US market is lacking really good rear mount bike racks like the European markets. I currently use a Thule EuroRide 940 bike rack on my E46 320d that I would love to be able to mount on the X1. I know the wiring is different between the Euro and American plugs but I am hoping the new X1 will be plug and play. It might be worth a trip to the dealership to see if they can make it work. |

Popped in to local BMW dealers this afternoon and had a chat with their Genius...helpful chap. He advised that the bike rack prep fitting cannot be adapted to take a regular swan neck/towball. The fitting is specific for the BMW bike rack and apparently you have to get the correct bike rack for your model X1 due to different exhaust arrangements etc. Good news was that he pointed out that I have self parking on my X1 which I didn't realise.

FYI.
I live in TW, and I ordered a set of BMW Roofbar from US with cost @USD242, but I installed with Thule Sprint 569 for the bike carriers. (Around USD230 per set for the carrier) To combine these two items, you will need the T-track Adapter 889-4. It worked very well. |

BTW, the dark blue paint looks great. Extremely classy. The BMW configurator website doesn't do it justice.

So I've bought the BMW roof bars and two BMW bike carriers.
Roof bars go on in about 5 minutes and don't seem to create too much wind noise (even though I have a glass roof) The bike carriers seem to whistle above 40 mph but that's not too unexpected and it isn't intrusive. Bike carriers are fine for my son's 16" bike as well as my rather larger bike. Can't upload the pictures from iPad but will upload as soon as I am on a PC - unless anyone has suggestions of how to resize it on iPad. |
