I was thinking of the states (I'm stationed in Germany), and 10k is just spitballing based on what I remember when I was shopping around last summer.

[QUOTE=Petercat]I ended up getting the e90 when I was shopping for a 5. I really loved the e90, even being a 325. It was a very nice car.

Spent some time lurking on this board and was seriously considering a 330i. But when I realized that I could get a 2003 E39 540i/6 M-sport for about the same price as a well equiped 330i, I jumped ship. Picked up a 2003 CPO 540i with a warrenty through 3/09, and only 23,500 miles for $42,000 (original MSRP was over $60K!). This is an awesome automobile.

I always thought the e39 5-series was classy, but now the e90 is just about it's size. The e60 5-series looks like it came out of a Japanimation cartoon replete with eyebrows (Japanese action figures sold separately).

Maybe I'm old fashioned, but I like designs from BMW to be a bit conservative and traditional like a nice business suit. Bell bottoms, large collars, and Oakleys are fine, but I wouldn't wear them to a "classy event."

If I could afford it, I would get a 530i in a heartbeat.

My preference is still a 330i over the E60. However, I will probably buy a 530i for my wife soon.

The E60 is very roomy and handles very well for a "larger" car. But the E90 is more sport oriented, whereas the E60 is a little more refined. My 330i has very firm steering and communicates more road imperfections. The 530i (speaking from an extended test drive) gives up about 10-20% of the acceleration and handling, but gives a more comfortable ride in return.

I seriously considered both cars as you are doing. Money was not that huge of a factor in the decision. I test drove both the 330 and 530 and found them silimar in performance although the E90 handling was definetely more sporty. The 530 felt more like a grown up car, something that I might get later in life. It felt incredible solid but too big for what I was looking for. I wanted to own the handling that BMWs are know for while I'm in my 30s.

I guess you have to decide what's more important based on your needs. Once you make a decision, go for it and never look back. It would suck to get an E90 and then regret not getting the 5 series every time you see one.

My loaded 330i cost more than my friend's brand new e60. For me, it's more of a personal preference than a cost issue.

my wife and I are bmw converts. we love the e60 5 series from day one. e90 rear took a while to get use to. wife and i now likes the rear end of my e90 after i got the blacklines.would probably upgrade to 5 series soon when kids become older. main prob with 5 series is that there will be difficulty selling one in manual,( currently only one e60 530 manual in singapore) would have to drive it to the ground literally. my e90 320i manual may have a similiar problem but i couldn't live with it in auto form.

I'm glad cost is not an issue for you; unfortunately for most people, it is an issue.

What trim and options does your friend have? If he had the same options as you in his E60, his vehicle would cost more. That's what I was getting at... options to options, I would choose the E60. I personally think the E60 looks better than the E90. But that is just my personal preference. For me, it came down to cost.

My 325 is perfect for me in every way. Price, performance and it's a new model to boot!!!

Not interested in anything 5 except for the M5.

I consider the 5, but the 330i and the 530 having the same engine you'll know right there which one is more fun to drive, being the 3 lighter and smaller.

I see what you're saying. I wanted a classy and luxurious 4-door sports car. To me, functionality, overall performance and sportiness were more important than luxury. He wanted a sporty luxury cruiser. I consider myself more of a sports enthusiast, and he just wanted something with room that rode nicely. So he got a basic 5-series without ZSP, without Navi, etc. His gf was surprised to see my door handles light up at night. Their e60 doesn't do that.

I drove his e60 felt it rode very smoothly and accelerated well enough (525i), but didn't feel as precise as my 330i. I'm sure a Z4 driver can say the same about my e90. Different strokes for different folks. I like both, but cost no object, I'd still buy the e90. In a few years maybe I'd go larger, maybe smaller. Who knows?
