R&T: The 2019 BMW M5 Competition is Ludicrous

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Full review at https://www.roadandtrack.com/new-car...-is-ludicrous/

The twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V-8 dumps a cool 617 horsepower to the ground through an eight-speed automatic transmission and an all-wheel drive system that does not care whether the road is dry or paved entirely with the tears of the SRT-8 driver in the lane next to you. It compresses reality, hustling the car’s 4,276 pounds to 60 mph in 2.8 seconds. It does not quit pulling, not past the speed limit, or twice that posted figure. Or three times the number on the sign.

This is what Achilles must have felt like. Drunk with ego. Content in the knowledge of his superiority.

I find the steering hard to get comfortable with. The car, perhaps due to the AWD, can be hard to keep centered sometimes. The steering wheel makes my hands tired as I find I am putting more effort into the steering than I do in other cars.

Just my .02. I still think the car is beautiful (in the right color, trim and wheels), sounds great and is blazinglly fast. It does so many things well that the things I do find somewhat disappointing stand out.

This is the first BMW I have owned since the company went to EPS, so I am biased and wish everyone went back to hydraulic. Fix the brakes, go back to hydraulic and its a win. I still find the EPS to be a terrible compromise and that BMW doesn't do it the best compared to other car makers efforts that I have experienced.

I basically have this exact car, but with black interior. It takes a little time to set it up, but I always wonder if people that review cars just run out of stuff to complain about. A nice young lady at SF BMW sat with me, for maybe like 10 mins before I left the dealership and I was able to setup everything...it wasn't hard. The brakes are fantastic. I think most people have just never drive a car with aggressive pads and limited travel. But, if you have, the CCBs are easy to modulate and work amazingly well. I've not had a car with real steering feel since my 06 evo. The evo was better than any car i've owned or driven. It was very awesome, but again...i can live without, this is a DD, not a track rat. My viper has not much steering feel, but a lot of chassis feedback and is fast as hell on track. Steering feel is kind of silly to over index on, imo.

I don't find the steering heavy at all. The carbon ceramic brakes are very grabby and I do agree on that point.

I like the points in the article. It is not criticizing the car, its more in owe of its power and amazed at its abilities.
But the point is - in order to harness all that power and use the car - it relies more and more on computers, so we are getting used to computers performing part of driving function and relying on them instead of the driving skill.

I used to turn all the systems (DSC) completely off on e39M5 and e46 M3 at the track and on the street since computer interfered with driving and rely on my skill and shifting Technic.

On this M5 it computers are in every part of the car( shifting, traction, suspension) and turning it off makes the 4 wheels drive act differently and power distribution changes.
Even for trained drivers - it is a challenging car to drive all out. Not many tracks in US where one can exploit top speeds and handling especially if you have M drivers pack 177MPH.

Another point is - getting untrained drivers behind the wheel of 2.8 second car is quite scary as well. I think it should come with driving school mandatory

Its the transmission that causes the grabby brakes. The downshifts are brutal when you're in anything other than Efficient.

Really? I don’t find it bad at all. At certain speeds, usually low speeds it can be a little abrupt, but I find it pretty smooth most of the time. Better than my old f10 dct. It’s not a luxury cruiser.

I agree that the Downshifts when not using the paddles can be a bit harsh but also agree the dct in the f10 was like getting kicked in the back each downshift!

Never had a DCT to compare it to. Its really bad when you want to do a slow gradual brake, not to bad when braking hard, but it is a luxury cruiser!

You think so? I don't feel like the M5 and especially the Comp model is a luxury cruiser. What would you call a Merc S-Class then? A lux-o-barge?

What would you call the M5 then? Its not a sports car, its not a GT? Its just a fast luxury car.

0-60 wise, isn't the comp faster? Many tests such as this, have the non-comp @ 2.8....

Probably by a hair to 60. 1/4 mile would probably be more of a noticeable difference if any at all between the two.

Agreed, 17hp is not earth shattering, it's all about the handling, etc. for the comp.

It tied the gt3rs at the eboladrome (sp?) on “The Grand Tour.” It also bested the GTR on the same circuit and this was not the competition model. Faster than the m4 gts at NCM Motorsports Park. I think GT is probably the closest. A luxury cruiser it is not.

I have not had your experience with my M5 Comp. The steering is direct and connected, the car feels much lighter than it is, and I have no trouble keeping it centered. I also do not agree with the article that there is no feedback from the steering. I have standard brakes and find them great, free from fade, and easy to modulate. All in all, about the only thing in that article I agree with is the statement that the M5 is a 4 door GTR. Only its better. Especially in Nardo with Aragon.

IMO, Jack of all trades master of "ALL".
No experience w/ the comp, but the M5 can do everything you ask! Want to drive to the likes, and even surpass some super cars, just dial it all up. Want to chill in 5 series luxury, just dial it all down. Want to swing the tail loose and roast the tires, disconnect AWD. Want to pass a Subaru or an SUV w/ all seasons in the snow up a hill (which I've done in bad storms on multiple occasions), slap on snows . The list goes on and on, it's an amazing car, truly...

It is so much a luxury cruiser—feel like I'm driving a big 7 series much of the time. But awe inspiring power and acceleration is the reminder of performance. It's a wolf in sheep's clothing...I just wish it looked a bit more wolf like...

This article is ridiculous

Hate to be a homer but I own this car and I found this article to be ridiculous. The reviewer clearly didn't spend much time in it given the size of the article and the confusion around its settings. (PS: the car doesn't forget your settings if you save them in the first place) You want a direct driving experience? Get an M2 or one of dozens of other cars on the market. I own a 911 GTS for that purpose. A car can't be everything...but at $125k, this car comes pretty close and should be commended for that. All that tech that makes it less connected makes the car better in other ways. Don't hate the car for what it's not, appreciate it for what it is....the ultimate grand tourer.
