Build Journal: Gold Shoes - Marina Bay Blue

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Welcome to my F90 M5 Build Journal! I’ll be using this thread to introduce my build which will be used for daily driving duties (taking kids to school, Costco runs etc.) and the occasional track day instructor (HPDE) duties. Since the F90 is already a very capable platform I’ll keep the mod list short for now: suspension, wheels/tires, intake, exhaust, and some carbon aero bits.

I’ve been the long time, original owner of two beautiful E92 M3s. With time, my family grew to three children and we added a Porsche Cayenne to the stable to haul the family. While the Cayenne is a great SUV, I itched for a more dynamic driving experience. I had previously driven an F10 M5 but found the car to be somewhat disconnected from the driver. I pulled the trigger on an F90 based on magazine reviews only. I got a great deal from Jimmy Bach at Steve Thomas BMW ( GOLFFRR ) and the rest is history. I had previously ordered my Euro Delivery M3 from STBMW so there’s history there.

Please enjoy the mostly stock picture introduction of my F90. (Car was delivered in Sep, didn’t get time to sit down and do a write up until now)

Make sure to come back and check on the build as it progresses!

Factory Options:
- Black Full Merino Leather
- Driving Assistance Plus
- Executive Package
- 20" M Wheels 706M
- Apple Car Play Compatibility
- Bowers & Wilkins sound system
- M Perf Black Kidney Grilles and Side Gills
- M Perf Carbon Fiber Rear Spoiler PARTS@STBMW

When BMW develops any M car, thousands of man-hours are put into making it into a finely balanced and turned performance machine. As such, it is important to respect the time and effort that went into tuning the M5 when you consider modding one.

To my knowledge this is the first F90 M5 in the United States to have the Vogtland Sport Spring Kit installed. My E92 M3 has Vogtland’s Sport Spring Kit installed so naturally I inquired to see if they had an F90 application.

My E92 M3 at SEMA:

The ride comfort is similar to the OE springs and the 1″ drop in front paired with the 0.7″ drop in the rear both lowers and levels the wheel gap between the front and rear. When it was all said and done I picked up an additional 0.3 degrees of negative camber up front and 0.2 degrees of negative camber in the rear, which will help with tire wear on the outside shoulders during the track days this car will see over the next year.

For those unfamiliar with Vogtland, they are an industrial spring part manufacturer that has been around for 110 years as of 2018. Almost 30 of these years have included the manufacture of aftermarket suspension components for passenger vehicles. To put this in perspective, KW Automotive has only been in business for around 26 years and they are one of the most beloved names in the industry. In contrast Vogtland has not put as much time or effort into marketing themselves so they may have flown under the radar a bit for many. Nevertheless, Vogtland is quintessentially German and that is reflected in the quality and engineering apparent in their products. They also have a respectable racing heritage to draw technical expertise from, having provided race springs for a number of NASCAR and Indy Car teams in North America over the years.

Worth every penny! HRE Wheels paired with wider Michelin PS4S saves 10+ lbs of unsprung weight per corner when compared to the OEM BMW set-up. A difference you can feel in acceleration/deceleration and suspension behavior.

My first set of HRE Wheels were actually a set of their FlowForm FF04s that I custom ordered to fit my E92 M3 back in 2017. After visiting their state of the art facility in Vista, CA and watching their fully forged line of wheels come to life inside a CNC machine I was hooked. When I got the F90, I knew I would have to budget for some fully forged mono-blocks. Mono-block wheels are incredibly strong and considerably lighter than a 3-piece forged wheel. I decided I would pick from their RC line, strong, lightweight track wheels that can take a beating.

HRE’s Pitch:
The Series RC1 motorsport Purposeful. The I-beam spoke geometry shows the true nature of these wheels: strong and efficient. While these wheels are designed to be abused on the track, they are still light enough to markedly increase performance and handling. For street or track, these are meant to perform.

HRE Wheels
Style: RC104
Finish: Satin Gold
Front: 20” x 10” ET 23
Rear: 20” x 11” ET 29

I’ve been a fan of Michelin PSS tires since they first came as OEM equipment on my E92 M3. They had great all around service life and decent performance on the track. I later upgraded to a separate set of Cup2s on track wheels. When the PS4S came out I was astonished that I was able to put down lap times within one second of my Cup2s. I now run PS4S on both of my M3s and this F90 M5.

Rear: 295/35/20

For the exhaust I decided to go with the RPI GTM cat-back full system. I'll post a full review in the "Exhaust Engine Mods" section of the forum.

Congrats on the car! I'm looking forward to your build.

What are you thinking for wheels and suspension?

Nice, what's the drop in inches from stock?
It doesn't look like is more then 3/4"
Looks similar to mine
Those Springs are open end?
Do you know the rate difference from stock?

IMO - from the pics the drop does not look like a drop at all.
My 2 cents.

Edit - however they seem to be a linear spring, which is always nice IMO.
Are the stock springs progressive?, i need to research.

2nd edit, let me guess stock fronts are linear and rear are progressive ?

If you look at his second post you will see that it dropped a little. Compare first post vs second

Now to you question about stock springs
The rear are progressive springs but, so are the front at some degree. Single rate spring needs to be consistent from front to back without reducing the body and pitch or the ends, on stock springs you can see begin and the end coil being reduced

Miko - the front are linear it seems, typical.
I wish someone would make the rear linear too, it is much more predictable at turns.

Thanks for the OEM photos. !

Front are at most part looks like 90% are liner
Back are dual rate springs
It all depends on design and weight of the car
You also have adaptive suspension that you change too.
Changing the rear to single Rate ( which is linear ) would't be a good idea on this car

By the way I make Springs for living and know a few things
I made Springs that have 5 rates ( progressive) and needs to be eccentric within .030 and square within 2 deg. After grinding the both ends. Wire diameter. 625"

HRE Wheels update coming soon!
Thanks for sharing.

I'm familiar w/ Vogtland but have never tried any of their products.

For my build I chose KW HAS and 21" Velos Wheels (been waiting on the wheels so hopefully will get this done soon); I went with KW HAS on both of my F10 M5 builds and was pleased with the results so stuck with the brand.

Looking forward to seeing the HRE's on the car.
