Now that I know that 69k is the magic number, I'm far more hopeful of this in my lifetime. I just cant stomach 6 figures for a watch, regardless of income or net worth or inheritances.

I could go on about a 20 page rant about swiss watch inflation/supply&demand etc... but I'll just say that this hobby has been almost completely ruined. I got a black Submariner Date about 5 years ago at msrp from my local AD. The display cases were full back in those days. It wasn't that long ago really but I now refer to them as the good old days! Because they are long gone. Anyway... about a year ago I decided i had to have one of the new 41mm Submariner models so I ended swallowing my pride and going to a grey market dealer and upgrading to the new model which will probably be my last Swiss watch unless things go back to normal. I used the profit from trading in the black sub to pay the difference in price markup over msrp for the new model. I can't remember exactly but I think I ended up paying about 9k with taxes for the black sub and when I traded it I got about 12k for it. I ended up with this beauty:

I was on that auction. I was hoping no one would show and I could get the Nautilus Tiffany or I could pick up the 5712. The Tiffany watch sold for $5.35M!!!! The others were selling for more than prices listed on Chrono24. On top of that there is a 26% buyers premium.

I have the same. It is by far my favorite watch in my small collection of Rolexes and Omegas. My second favorite is the first Omega Seamaster 300 I bought over 20 years ago. Have changed the band to NATO straps years ago, and it’s my summer/bang around watch. |
