I didn't have a 2021+ M550, but came from the 2018 version. I actually debadged the back of it because I felt like a bit of an imposter. Now that I'm finally in the M5, I'll never go back. Absolutely worth it in my mind.

If you get the m550 it'll be more comfortable for a daily arguably. And you get cooler features like active sway bars and rear wheel steering (pretty sure that was an option)

The 550i xdrive is a 5 series that goes fast. Given that lesser models go fast enough for all practical purposes, I think it is silly to get one that just goes faster.

The M5 is a halo car, top of the heap, completely excessive, different suspension, wheels, engine. While it is also "silly", as little of this performance is accessible on the street, it still has purpose as the icon.

I really like my 2021 M5C, but not nearly as much as any of my past sports cars (MR2, Miata, 1988 911, GT3). We only need one car, and only have garage space for one, so I am "stuck" with the compromise M5.

If I needed two cars, I would have a much more basic 5 series like a 530, and a 911 of some sort. Sounds like you already have this - I would not trade Rivian plus 911 for M5, unless I really, really wanted to simplify things.

M5 is special
M550 is a fast sedan but not special
it seems you and your wife like special cars , Cayenne GTS , 991 GTS , E63
so why even bother with M550
you bought Porsche GTS variants because they are more special than S variants . Do I need to keep going !!!!
what year is the Cayenne GTS . I have car ADD myself and just sold my 2023 Cayenne GTS for my second F90 M5. Though I admit that V8 engine sound was perfection and reminded me of my E63

Really interesting take. I know people who have had all the cars you mention that really like them, but I can’t fathom how any of them (perhaps other than the GT3) would like those cars more. Perhaps it has to do with the fact that the M5 is sports sedan as opposed to a sports car (though it certainly masquerades as one in many scenarios and circumstances). Otherwise I can’t even see the comparison. There’s nothing wrong with any of those cars, of course, but the M5 is a significantly nicer and more luxurious car, while still being a driver’s car in my opinion.

The M5 is way more luxurious, and way faster in a straight line, than all my other sports cars (even the GT3, I think). But the luxury, heft, and isolation makes it way less fun to me. There is also no romance in it at all, and it does not bring as many smiles...

Cars these days have gotten too fast and heavy to be really fun on the street. The Miata I had was first generation - it was fun, fun, fun! Small, under wheeled/tired, you could push it without getting crazy. My wife would not get in it, however, so it was short lived.

I mean it is sort of weird, but somehow needing to keep the car floored the whole length of the on ramp to zoom on the highway was more fun to me than needing to brake before getting on the highway because I am already doing 90 MPH.

The M5 is a mid size luxury sports sedan, not a sports car. Like most modern cars, it is an appliance, without much character. It is a really really good appliance, though. An M5 and a 911 would be a great combination of cars to have.

I could totally see it from that perspective. Everybody likes and wants something different, so it seems for your use case, those cars made more sense for you, and, it sounds like they were more visceral to you.

To this point, the M5 gives me all the smiles that I know none of those other cars would. Again, everybody has their own preferences. So long as you’re going with whatever makes you happy, then that’s all that matters.

What would really make me happy is an extra garage space. Alas, that is not to be

To each their own. Having done private at PC in M5 and just recently done private at another track in a miata and 350Z, I couldn't wait to get back in the M5. Completely different universe and I for one, am struggling to think of anything the M5 doesn't do 10x or more better.

Drove a 23 M5 Comp today. Quite nice. Now the decision new versus pre-owned or possibly even wait 2 years hoping to pick up a mint F90 when the 25 model arrives?

As for prior question from @m3pgh the cayenne gts is a 2016 which has served us well. Quicker but does not sound as good as the 4.8 v8 which proceeded it but ultimately much prefer the current gen 4.0 TT available in the cayenne gts.

Need some time to think about next steps. thanks to all for the input.

Personally, if it's a financially weighted decision I would be looking at a 2021, or 2022, allow that owner to take the biggest portion of the depreciation. Youll still have a lot of warranty, and free maintenance.

If youre considering a 2025 model, if you buy a 2021, or 2022 right you would be in a good/decent spot when a 2025 MY arrive.

If it's not finically weighted, go with the 2023.

Hi buddy,

I just put a deposit down on a 23 M5 and compared the m550i to it before pulling the trigger (also compared the RS7). M550i is def a nice car and is softer than the m5. I have an old 911 as my fun weekend car as well. The m5 for me will be my dad car. Something I drive more often and wanted to have that ability to play with, which is something the m550i won't be as good as the m5.

I could go on about the history of the m5 badge, etc. But you already know all that.

Buddy of mine has a Rivian. It's fine, but EV trucks aren't my thing and I don't think it compares to your stable now). Get a F150 raptor (doesn't have to be R) for some real fun with a truck.

If you have the money, M5, 100%.

m550 is a great car for the money. But, it's not an M5. Can't be helped.

Appreciate the discussion and input from all. Ultimately decided to hold on the purchase for now and enjoy the vehicles we currently own. Feels a little strange to not have a BMW in our family but suspect it will only be a matter of time Thanks again and hope you enjoy the summer in great health. Just thinking, a M3 Touring or better yet M5 Touring in the U.S. would be compelling and might be sufficient to make headway?

I have an M550 and a Cayenne GTS (2021 model). Am also thinking of an M5 to replace M550. M550 is fast but handling is very numb and it’s more a comfy DD … I believe C&D referred to it as a “rocket couch”. Not a bad analogy!

My M550 has the resonator delete - sounds great. The Cayenne GTS sounds 10x better

I want a 911 but don’t want the price tag… toyed with the idea an M3 Comp xDrive as well.

But I like the utility / size of my 5er.. so an M5 might be in my future…

resurrecting this because i just took the m5c in for its breakin service and was given an m550i as the loaner. awesome car. pulls hard, still has some exhaust drama, super comfortable i the city. and i'm super glad i got the m5 just feels so much more special. better steering feel and exhaust note, better interior materials (though that could be a spec difference i guess).

That’s an awesome loaner. My SA will try to get me lined up with the “nicest” or “comparable” loaner cars, but I’ve never gotten anything as (somewhat?) comparable as the M550.

Hahah I was gonna say the same. My SA is very very friendly with me as is the director of the whole service department and no matter what they do the nicest loaner I ever get into is a 530 Smdh 😂 he did promise that within the next 2 months they will have a couple XM’s and 7’ers and promised next service he’d hook it up with one. I’ll have to see it to believe it. Also tells me the XM’s aren’t selling for shit

Yeah it was definitely a pleasant surprise, esp since not that long ago they had no loaners to give, full stop.
