The itch to get a new car
I drive a pre-lci comp. Had a lot fun decking it out with M Performance parts, perfecting the stance, etc. Tuned it to Stage 2, it's an absolute rocket, and so much fun to drive. Really puts a smile on my face every morning.
That being said... the itch resurfaced, I long for something new. The question is, should I scratch it? The other option is waiting until 2023 for the G60 M5, which makes sense, but I'm not convinced I have the patience for that. I love how the LCI looks, but switching pre-lci to lci makes little financial sense given it's almost the same car. Taycan turbo comes to mind - looks amazing, and has four doors too, which I need (kids). I'm worried about missing the exhaust sound though, I'm currently on a mayhem-wrecking decat one. Another idea I had (as much as I don't want to get another car) is getting a project car to spend my time with, like the E46 M3, which are still relatively cheap. For track days, I already have a M2 Comp that collects dust these days. Anyone else with the M5 struggling with the itch? How do you handle it? |

Makes perfect sense to want to move in a different direction. Especially when a LCI or limited run spec pops up. I built a F80 M3 during the past 2 years. Just like you in a sense, I perfected the car to my specs...coil overs, forged wheels, Pure Turbos, upgraded cooling, BBK, cosmetics, the list goes on. Then I said to myself, now what? So I moved into the F90 and will start all over. Half the fun is getting there and watching the progress of the build. Then when it’s done or close to it, and you’re not too attached to the car, repeat the cycle once again. Keeps me busy and out of other trouble...

What about a e39 or E38. I've been eyeing them up for a while! Do an engine swap or just fix one up

I had the itch 18 months ago while driving an '18 m5 and jumped to a Panamera gts and almost instantly regretted it.
Just lease transferred the Porsche on Tuesday and now I'm eagerly awaiting my LCI comp that is currently awaiting carrier assignment. To be fair, I probably wouldn't have known and if it wasn't the Panamera it was going to be something else. I was waiting for an rs6 until the dealer screwed me so I'll be honest and say the m5 wasn't my first choice. But I do think I would have regretted my rs6 and looked to get out of that after a little time as well. I'm happy to be almost back in an m5 and sometimes you don't know what you have til it's gone. |

Just go out and test drive the cars you like. Its what keeps my itch for a new car on check.

I am struggling a little too. The way i sometimes manage isnt really cheaper- i also have a truck (ram limited) and a manual m4 so not driving the m5 everyday is helpful. Helps appreciate the m5 a little more. M4 aint an m5 but whailing on a manual straight six ain't a bad day at the playground.
But i posted a day ago with basically the same issue you are having so clearly my solution doesnt help much in any event. I bought the f90 outright thinking if keep it for a long time but these ba***ds just keep making them better! |

Take your F90 to the track for a day. You will have such a blast that you will fall in love all over again!

I always have the itch but right now its more for a new family car because that's whats getting driven. I've put one tank of gas in my car since March... strange times.
Problem is my wife loves her LR4... not sure I'll ever be able to sell it. |

Oh no... the itch...
Try wrapping it in a funky colour! Visually the change will satisfy you for at least 6 months. I always have a nice m/c to accompany my car. Different enjoyment, social group, routes / destinations, and tuning project... if bikes are something you like it really helps budget wise too |

Just got a 2021 range rover sport v8, not gonna lie the exhaust is louder than the M5, and the exhaust note is on another level compared to the M5. It's kinda crazy how much volume LR decided to give to the car, what a beast.

I say the "cure" is to test drive other cars and to track the F90. When you test drive other cars then get back into your F90. You will remember why you chose it in the first place....
Then, I would also track it. It's a great looking but still ordinary looking sedan. It's virtues are really embedded deep. Driving fast on public roads really doesn't scratch the surface unless you're both reckless and stupid. So track it. Use all of that M engineering. Use what you really paid for. Then drive it home in comfort mode. If you do that, you will be in awe at how broad the bandwidth of this car is. It can be a track monster, but then comfortably drive you home. It's like the wife that is an awesome friend, mother and cook who is an insatiable animal in bed.... if you have that you wouldn't want anyone else...lol |

I bought a 991.2 Turbo S last Christmas and I haven’t looked at the F90 since. The 911 is my daily now, the F90 is my wife’s. With just intercoolers, exhaust and tune, the 911 is a low 10/high 9s car in the 1/4 mile and handles much better than the F90. My 5yo fits comfortably in the back, but I can’t fit my 2yo behind me (I’m 6’6). If you don’t need 4 seats or you’re not a big guy, I’d say get a 911 Turbo S (991.2 or 992).
The Taycan Turbo S is also a great choice for a city car. I don’t think electric cars are practical for long range trips (yet). |

I drove a Taycan Turbo when they first came to dealers and found it both impressive and unimpressive at the same time. There are some areas of the handling/dynamics that shine, and others that are disappointing, and then a lot of areas regarding the "daily abilities" and practicality that really bring the car down for me. Its not really a car I would want in comparison to say an AMG GT4D that is priced the same as the Porsche, but that's mainly because I can't say no to a V8.
Honestly for the same amount of cash for the one I drove, you could get a Model 3 LR/Performance AND a 718 GTS 4.0, that is still the biggest reason why I don't like the Taycan. Maybe the 4s and Sport Turismo variants will change my mind.

I got a 2020 992 Carrera S manual in March and it has become my daily. Hard to get out of it. It's just awesome. My wife has become addicted to driving my F90 M5C. Sometimes I feel a little "that's mine" and have to drive it for a few days just make the point. That said, I still really love the F90. It's such a beast. Drove it from SF to LA recently and its just so flexible. So comfortable and so insanely powerful. It's just and unbelievable automobile. I love it. |

Before my '20 M5C, I had an '18 ZL1 w/10 speed auto--and it was just awesome! Insanely good, powerful car, handles great, sounds awesome and looks great! The price is also just unbelievable. A good add to anyone's stable.
