Rear Differential Lock Reduced Error

All,

Not sure if anyone has any experience with this error but thought I would try and get some feedback before calling dealer. Was driving home tonight and the car went into limp mode, error said I can keep driving but "rear differential lock reduced". When I turn it off/on, errors go away but if I drive it a few feet, comes back.

I got the car home but from what I have read, this may be the control unit. Car is a 2020 with 9k miles.

Any feedback would be appreciated, super annoying.

Sounds like you need to go to the dealer.

My advice would be, to make sure to go on your stock wheels, and without any spacers. In case you might have those installed. As they might claim that it was the cause of this issue and give you a hard time.

I had the same error about 3 months ago. Rang the dealer who told me to bring it in. Sat the car overnight - error was gone the next day and it didn't recur. Took it to the dealer and they couldn't find anything wrong! They cleared the codes and it never came back. Doesn't help you much I suppose but it may be reassuring to know it wasn't a big deal.

Was thinking the exact same thing given my ratios are slightly different! Its time for the winters on the stock wheels luckily so I will do that and take it in.

Ugh, hopefully its something simple.

Thanks for the feedback everyone.

Circling back for those who may experience this in the future. I decided to try and put it into 2WD and drove it, no errors. I then went back to 4WD and no errors. If you have this issue, try driving it in 2 wheel and see if it goes away.

I did encounter before and went away after the dealer did a reprogram of the electronic modules. That was like a year ago. Usually would be just an electronic software issue

Jacko,

Did you take it to the dealer?

Electronic Weird Errors happen and does not necessarily mean there is a mechanical problem. I had a similar drive train error on a new A8L which I had had for about a week. Got an error. It went away, and never returned....more than 50k miles after.....so hopefully it's some fluke. I would be wary to allow the dealer to "Learn on your car" if the error goes away and there does not appear to be any real mechanical issue.

I had this error along with 4wd errors at least 20 times, BMW cannot find a fix for it...Super annoying. - It seems to be a software issue that they haven't invested in fixing yet, maybe if they hear enough people have this issue they will find a fix.

Did this come up after prolonged intervention of Traction Control?
