Did anyone had to add cooling fluent ?

Hi all ,

I was wondering if anyone of you had to add cooling fluent ?

Yesterday , while the first start of the day (so engine cold) , I immediately got a warning message saying cooling fluent was low.

I added some fluent , for the level to be between MIN and MAX , as recommended in the iDrive , and the message never appeared again on my way back home over 500km (350 miles).

My car has 22 000km (13 670 miles).
I took an appointment for service next week , better do it know than later (iDrive says service is requested in 3800km).

Thanks for your feedback !

I believe there is a recall/service bulletin specifically for the F90 from BMW for this issue. I never got an actual low coolant warning message but my dealer service department did inform me that they also took care of a minor coolant issue during my 1200 mile service.

Yes this happened to me just last Saturday. I topped it up (maybe a pint or so low) and called the dealer. Not heard anything.

I only have about 4k miles. 19CP.

Thank you folks.

So it's a good thing that my car goes next week for the second service , a little bit earlier than it should.

Funny thing , I've never added oil yet on the M5.
On my X5M , I've added 1 liter of oil at 15 000km , halfway between the first and second service.

spoke to the service dept and they said there was a "recall" for this issue. Don't know if they really meant a recall or a bulletin. This was Stevens Creek BMW. Taking it in next week.

I never got a call from the dealer , or a letter letting me know about this.

I'm not driving my car until my appointment next week , I rather take no risk.

My car was in for service yesterday , 3600km before the "normal" schedule.
I prefered to have my car checked ASAP.

I've explained that I had to add some cooling fluent , ant they said that there was an actual recall on my car car for this purpose.

They checked everything , and all is fine. No leaks.
I can't explain why my car needed cooling fluent to be added , but I'm glad everything is fine.

Dropped my car off today for service have about 4700 miles on it. Coolant light came on second time, my SA said there's a recall with the coolant. I will post part number after job is done.

Error for coolant

I just had my car serviced for coolant. Car gave error to add coolant. Advisor asked my if I had added any. Apparently, the level of coolant was low. No leaks but why was it low? They added the coolant and will see. Thought it was odd. Car has 4500 miles. I have owned many BMWs, first time to add coolant.

Did the problem come back again? Apparently the f90 has a known issue where it burns off coolant because it overheats too much...

I had the warning last week. The dealer took it the next day, did a pressure check and added coolant, job done. I asked was there a recall, they said no. There’s two coolant tanks apparently, classic one-upmanship!

The car doesn't "overheat" from normal driving it's just putting the turbos inside the V produces a shit ton of heat which uses up a lot of coolant.

Now track use is a different story. This isn't a track car. It will heat soak.

Every winter....when the weather gets cooler, I have gotten that low coolant warning, I have added ?8 ounces each year? Seams like that is not that unusual in the colder climates. It is just that the newer cars actually have sensors for the coolant level, were older cars did not and you would just check the levels by eye on occasion.

Seems like it's more than just that. The f90 has a coolant issue where it definitely consumes way more of it than it should be. Have a look at this thread where it's been discussed in detail.

Well I'm close to 3k miles. I guess I'll check mine to see. I'm not in the habit of trusting random Instagram posters. But I can check myself and see how low it is. Plus I remember the discussion on the thermostat and heard it was computer controlled vice spring pressure controlled.

Let us know how it is, am actually curious. The insta poster has worked on a ton of f90s, checking it out he's basically a bmw wizard who knows what he's talking about.

I think the thermostat is computer controlled but they are saying installing this one integrates into the car as the OEM one does just that it triggers the cooling at 90C instead of the stock 105C.

Just FYI, since I didn’t see anyone mention it:

This car has two coolant loops with two places to add coolant. Make sure you do both if you’re doing it yourself.

When this came out BMW claimed something about not accounting for expansion/contraction and then just being under filled from the factory IIRC. Nothing about consumption they admitted to.

I got this cooland level low warning at 11.000 km.After taking this warning message several times I added 250 ml drinkable water to my coolant, and i never get this message again.I think it's a common issue for m5 f90.

Water ? Why didn't you use cooling fluent ?

This is a high performance engine, I wouldn't play it low by adding regular water...
