As much as most White folks want to or think they understand being non-white, most just have no idea. And this is not to be offensive. It's a conclusion I've solidified over a long time.

I observe. And in the NY Metro area, most white people are pretty chill and have a mix of real friends. But as you move away from that spectrum...where there's a more homogenous White community, the "ignorance" is very apparent.

I don't use ignorance here as a CW term or in a derogatory way. I use it in the pure defintion of "not knowing".

I employ empirical evidence that I've observed in Dallas. You'd be surprised how unknowing some White people are of other cultures, let alone knowing they could say or do something offensive to other races. Something simple like wearing a sombrero and thick mustache and posing for a Mexican Tuesday photo is all in good fun but ended up

Growing up among 33% Asians in my HS and then 25% Asian in college, I really got a firsthand view of what it means to be Asian in the US. Hanging out with my Puerto Rican friends and their families through college helped me gain insight on their culture. Same goes for Nigerian American, Indian, and Black. All perspectives different than growing up in a purely White American framework.

Agree with this and most of what led up to it. HOWEVER. Ignorance is not really a good excuse. I will usually give someone a pass once on something like that.
"Dude, that is seriously offensive." People generally get one of those. And I can chalk that to being raised in some backwater or having parents who did not raise them right. But after that, shit don't fly. And that is most everyone on most everything. "My background" or "my upbringing" is (largely) a bullshit excuse used to justify just not trying. I wish I were perfect. I learn of ways now and then that I can improve. When I do, I make a choice whether to get better in that area. If I choose not to, I have communicated that it is not important enough to me. From there out, I have no choice but to own that imperfection, because I chose it. Choosing to do nothing about it is the same thing as choosing it.

For me it says more about the person saying the derogatory term then it does about the person it is being said to. That covers all races and both directions.
