And in the NY Metro area, most white people are pretty chill and have a mix of real friends. But as you move away from that spectrum...where there's a more homogenous White community, the "ignorance" is very apparent. I don't use ignorance here as a CW term or in a derogatory way. I use it in the pure defintion of "not knowing". I employ empirical evidence that I've observed in Dallas. You'd be surprised how unknowing some White people are of other cultures, let alone knowing they could say or do something offensive to other races. Something simple like wearing a sombrero and thick mustache and posing for a Mexican Tuesday photo is all in good fun but ended up Pissing off a bunch of Latinos. I chalk it up to the lack of exposure and lack of "ethnic" experience. Growing up among 33% Asians in my HS and then 25% Asian in college, I really got a firsthand view of what it means to be Asian in the US. Hanging out with my Puerto Rican friends and their families through college helped me gain insight on their culture. Same goes for Nigerian American, Indian, and Black. All perspectives different than growing up in a purely White American framework. My 2 cents. |

It's totally not an excuse to claim ignorance, but it just happens so much, I often ignore it rather than explain it. Especially to middle aged women whom look like Mrs. Bush and drive a Suburban when she has 2 kids. |

I was thinking of getting an orange 1970 Dodge Charger, putting the Korean flag on top, painting "General Lee" on the roof, and installing a Gangnam style horn...and see what the reactions would be. In Texas.
Then I woke up and realized it would cost too much. |
