What I do find important is the tire differences. The PS4's would make a sizable difference - especially for crappy surfaces. One to one testing is needed to get one to one results. I am still betting that the Motortrend comparo will show the F90 slightly quicker to 60 and through the 1/4. E63S has the superior roll/top end. |

I think the CarWow video was a pretty good test of both cars, same track conditions, same time etc.
I'm not surprised the times he was posting on a hot racetrack are faster than a cold damp UK runway, and nor should anyone else be. If the blue M5 he tested was a BMW press car it would only raise my doubts about the times, imo. Would it really be a 100% standard car, who knows. Two production customer cars on the same track at the same time would be the best comparison videos and I'm sure more will be coming out in the near future. Nevertheless, before watching this video i was expecting the M5 to be the faster car. |

This only works for the m4 and e63s because there transmissions have clutches. Dual clutch in the m4 and multi clutch in the e63s this allows you to disengage the trans to freely rev the motor. They then drop the clutch to let the surge of power through while gradually slipping the clutch to keep wheel spin down. The F90 has a torque converter automatic which makes this impossible. The F90’s launch control isn’t a real launch control it just has a higher stall torque converter that allows some more revs before moving the car. You can not increase the rpm in the f90 as that would cause the car to move. It’s just like doing a “brake torque” launch with your foot on the gas and brake at the same time it’s just better controlled by the F90 “launch control” computer.

True, though I am not sure why that doesn’t allow adjusting rpms before launch as long as you are not loading the driveline too much. I assume the car will go out of launch control mode (and into limp mode) if it detects high temperatures in the torque converter to protect itself.
The ZF8 box should be perfectly capable of decent launches whatever the internals, given that it is used in the Dodge Demon as well. |
