How many times a day do you rev near redline?

Assuming you've past break-in period and the engine is well warmed-up.

Just wondering because now that I'm past break-in, I find myself doing it at least 2-3 times per day, whenever there is a long stretch of empty space in front of me.

Second gear pulling from 5000rpm to redline is the shiznit!
Third gear redline involves extra-legal speeds, so I don't dare do it too often.

The tach needle just rushes towards redline much much faster than in my previous E46 330i. And before I know it, I have to shift into the next gear or else I'll bounce off the rev limiter (which I haven't hit yet).

I never hit 5000rpm before.. I did a few times with high 4000's. I don't really want to catch too much attention from around me because of this revving. And yes, the pull is amazing when you rev it up high.

Pardon my ignorance, but in cars equipped w/ step., putting the gear shift into D/S mode, doesn't the tranny automatically redline in each gear? Perhaps I'm off topic w/ my q?

only if you have it pedal to the metal.

ding! I should have got that. Thanks anyway... D/S just produces quicker upshifts/downshifts.

It does rev to near red line if you press on the accelerator aggressively. I don't like it that much when I am in DS mode and then launching at a red light. It makes me feel that I am trying to race the car next to me because of the revving sound. But in DS mode, it's more fun and signnificantly more responsive.

Isn't above 4500rpm where the variable resonance induction system and double vanos start to come into play? If you only drive below those engine speeds, you aren't getting everything the engine has to offer.

I say that car manufacturers conservatively redline their engines, and these babies are born to rev, so rev away! That's why you bought a BMW - their engines have always been howlers, except for that strange but thankfully brief period where they produced low rpm engines when the last fuel crisis hit.

Almost everyday. But then again, it's relatively easy. Mine only revs to 4500rpm

I do it at least once a day, sometimes 2 or three times. I can’t help it, the pull above 5K is so addictive. My apartment complex has a long straight driveway – perfect for gunning it all the way to redline in 1st and sometimes 2nd (if I feel brave enough).

(sigh) I love this car.

Now past break in period. My car has 2600 miles. I redline it on a weekly basis (not daily due to my strange commute schedule)

Engine really sings above 4K + all the way through redline. Beautiful note.

Transmission seems to have a break in preiod as well. It used to be a bit notchy and now everything is pretty smooth.

Looking forward to Spring for AutoX

I pretty much constantly rev it to 6000+

I get terrible fuel economy, but screw it, it's worth it.

I would have to agree with you there :-) I redline quite often. I can even redline in "relaxed" driving hehehe....

Love the low down torque though...I can have a thrilling drie at 80km/h in 4th~!

Have any of you noticed that the car seems to have more low end torque at when you give it partial (70%) throttle than when you go WOT? It also seems to have a faster throttle response at partial throttle. If I’m driving around 30 mph in 2nd gear and tap on the gas pedal I get this rush of acceleration. But if I do the same thing except pedal to the metal, there seems to be slight delay and the rush isn’t as strong until the engine picks up more revs. I know it’s just my butt dyno, but I was wondering if anyone else noticed that.

BTW, I have a 330i with 6mt.

there's really no power rush in the 325,

I don't really think there's any reward to rev the car past 5500-6000 rpm

the last 1000 rpm is prettly bleh

Only got 78 miles on her. Don't think I'll be redline her anytime soon. Also, I never even redline any car I drove in the past. But I'll probably do her after break in just to see how it feels like.

I also do it every day. It's just so exhilarating and makes it that much more exciting to drive. I would say between 4-5 times.

Same exact thing here ... commented on it in another thread. I personally think that since the throttle is all computer controlled, they're playing with the throttle settings to make the car feel faster than it really is. 50-70% throttle really = WOT and that last little bit is all Tonka pedal. You can play with it but nothing's happening.

Either that or it's dumping so much fuel in that it's going rich and the computer is monkeying with the timing.

The most disappointing thing is going down to 4th on the freeway, gunning it and not having anything happen. I'm used to a big v8 that when you stomped it on the freeway it got up and stormed past 100 without even straining.

Ok, at least it's not just me. I thought I was imagining things. My previous car (Maxima) never had this problem. In fact the throttle response on that car was so sensitive that it was difficult not jerk it in 1st gear - I kinda miss that when driving the E90. These computer controlled throttle response is killing some of my fun.

I agree with you about higher gear acceleration. When I drive my friend's G35, the 4th gear kick is instantaneous and very satisfying. But I also love the fact that I can drive at 110mph and feel safe whereas the G35 is scary at that speed.

I have 4300 miles on it now, but only reline it no more than 10 times
The traffic isn't allowing me to do that.
