Storing tires without rims

Hey all, asking for a friend - he wants to switch to winter tires on the same rims and keep the summers in his garage. I have separate rims but I guess he's trying to save some money.

Is this ok? What's the best way to store them indoors to avoid rot or other damage/compromise?

Keep the off season tires inside sealed tire bags with DampRid packets or silica gel packets. BMW branded ones are water/humidity resistant, but still allow the tires to breathe. Tie a piece of string/twine loosely around the width of the tire so it's not putting pressure on it, but taut enough to stay in place at the 12:00 o'clock position with a light knot. Then cut the string so it dangles down under the knot (like a tail) inside the empty (diameter) portion of the tire near the center. Duct tape the string to packets so they dangle without touching any interior surface of the tire. I do a seasonal tire swap on the M5 using just one set of 706M wheels year round, and the off season tires are stored at my dealership (who taught me this method), but I store off season tires for my other cars this way on my own. Depending on where you're located, and whether the garage is climate controlled, you may want to replace the packets every month or two. Some DampRid packets and some silica gel packets will have indicators for when they're saturated, but many don't.

Also, I'd note, some people just really like their wheels and want to use them year round, rather then going with a different looking wheel they don't like as much, as getting two sets of the same wheel might be silly.

Great points. Thank you for the helpful suggestions!
