Front license plate adapter for M5

I will be picking up my new M5C this weekend. The dealer asked me if I wanted the front plate attached to the bumper. He said he would have to drill holes in the bumper cover. I asked him not to do that. Texas requires front plates.

Added later --> I live on the Northside of Houston.

Someone told me about this option... STO N SHO available from Amazon:

As of the time of this post, the STO N SHO bracket is available and in stock.

Amazon search:
STO N SHO Front License Plate Bracket for 2019-2020 BMW M5 and M5 Competition with Adaptive Cruise Control

Today's price is $87.99 with free prime delivery.

I will have my kit Tuesday. I plan to attach the small adapter piece to the bottom of the front trim this weekend. I will keep the plate in the trunk.

By the way, has anybody here in Texas tried this solution? Any concerns from our women and men in blue?

I don't remember who shared this with me ... Thanks

I have used US mill works for my past 5 BMWs. Works great and does not interfere with the sensors. Get the quick release lightened one.

Kind of depends on where you are in Texas. My wife's car has not had a front plate in 3 years. She has had no issues and it is pretty normal to see cars without the front plate in Dallas/Fort Worth. However it is illegal and the police have a reason to stop you if they need one. Putting it in the window is not legal in Texas.

Here to echo AHall above if you look carefully in Houston it may be only 80 pct of drivers that have both plates. Your mileage may vary but I'll pay the fine if it comes to it.

LA/California also requires front plates. It's really the luck of the draw to get pulled over without front plates. My current car, I drove without the front plate for 2 years until one day near downtown LA a cruiser pulled me over just for that. Like a CA once told me on delivery of the car, just drive without one until you get cited.

I was looking into a tow hook mount one (like the one M5 guy suggested) so I can just show it and have the fix it ticket be closed then take it off. Is that what most folks do?

That is what I have done for the past 2 years. I keep the plate and toe hook mount in the trunk. Maybe if I show the officer that I have it he'll give me a break.

Both my tickets for this in California were when I parked on the street. Once I fixed it, once I just paid the fine.

Since I share the M5 with my wife, and the amount of grief I would get if she got a ticket for this makes any other fine pale in insignificance, we got the front license plate installed.

I would second using a solution from US Mill Works. I had the quick release one on my F10, but never used the quick release when I wanted a nice, clean looking front (I would take the whole this off). I did get a lightened one for the F90, but have not installed it yet. The front plate is sitting on the back seat. I will get around to it eventually. It is a $50 ticket in NJ. Putting it in the front window is also illegal here.

I have one on my M6GC and LOVE it. Can barely tell it's there when I take my plates off.

It's saved me once already: "Sorry officer, I took off my plates to wash my car this week and forgot to put them back on. Here they are, in the front passenger footwell... so if you let me step out of the car, they'll be back on in 30 seconds".

Done and dusted.

That is good advice... You responded to one of my other posts. You have great advice ... 2/2!

I used to live in North Carolina. My worst ticket was in Virginia. Cost me a fortune. After that, I always took it easy in VA. I would be scared to take chances with plates there... So if it works for you in VA, then it should work for me here in TX. Road patrols here are definitely more relaxed. I grew up in Ohio [First 30 years] ... Ohio is a whole other level.

I have the sto and sho on my M5C and it fits and works perfectly. The very small holes go underneath the bumper so you don't see a thing when you take off the plate. And it's a quality product. I have people telling me all the time that they don't get caught without a front plate. That has NOT been my experience in VA. And most importantly, there are times (eg after a few drinks with dinner) when you don't want to be pulled over for any reason. Don't let it be simply because you didn't have a front plate.

I bought one from Amazon that I can screw into the tow hook holder. Works well and is easy to screw on and off.

Has anyone used carbonio?

I am currently using platypus which is OK. I'd rather, just do what some here are suggesting. Go without one in the front and take my chances

Depends on the cop. I've got ticketed once while in our X5 and had to cop up the fees.

The second and only other time was a better experience. The cop asked me to go home knowing my home address was 2 mins away and put it on immediately.

Pure luck but you assume the risk when you openly flaunt a State requirement.

I have a Sto n sho in NY where cops take front plate laws super seriously. When I'm driving locally, to the gym/coffee/errands I keep it off as my local cops don't bother me unless I'm driving like a douche, but when I get out of my hometown radius I throw the plate on. Especially near NYC, driving without a front plate in front of NYPD is like holding a gun out of the window to them. But with the amount of BMW's that run from cops on the NYC highways I don't blame them as to why they're so uptight about us car guys.

It's super convenient. Comes on & off in 2 seconds. If you're worried about tickets just leave it on, then take it off when taking a picture or it's parked at home or something.

I also have sto n sho, and it's great, no complains about it. Hidden enough when the plate is off.

Dealer drilled holes in my bumper which pissed me off. That said, I live in CA and the police in my town are ticket nazis. They love handing out tickets as a form of taxation as a means to counter the city's incompetence at managing its budget.

I've been driving in Houston without a front license plate for > 10 years. Been pulled over for multiple speeding tickets and never been ticketed for not having a front license plate. When I bought my F80 years ago, I bought a license plate holder that attaches to the tow hook mount in the front bumper. It sat in my trunk for years until I took it out a couple of years ago. I wouldn't sweat it.

Carbonio works very well and you can center the plate to the car to look balanced. Add a legal smoked front plate cover to the plate and it looks even better.
