They could have put out a statement 2 + 2 = 4 and people here would say oh their spinning something.

So this is where BMW probably sees theirs market in the US on the SUV size, even though the 4 series stepped up its game on the sales side.

The US has been moving towards an SUV predominant market in the past 6-8 yrs but BMW has been able to sell a fair amount of 3 and 5 series even with this trend. The anomaly of the 4 series has more to do with the I4 electric demand (which has been exceptional) than people preferring a 4 series to a 3 or 5 series. With Ford stopping production of sedans and GM leaning that way, I hope BMW doesnt look at this trend and starts phasing out its sedans too as clearly the SUV are carrying the company's profits (just like Fords and Chevy's). Maybe when production ramps up, the sedan numbers might improve, but it is certainly worrisome and BMW might start cutting out models in the sedan line up to save production space and preserve profits soon.

I interpret the low sales of the 3/4/5 Series vs. the X3/X5 to possibly be that they can't build the in-demand sedans in Europe fast enough. I've had an i4 M50 on "pre-order" since the beginning (for more than a year) with no indication when it might ever get built. I just checked the two largest dealers in San Diego county and there are no M3's and only M4 convertibles on the lot. You can't tell me there's no demand for the new M3/M4. Apparently BMW can't build them.

Meanwhile, the X-Series are built in the USA and BMW is clearly pumping them out in large numbers!

BMW might be building 3ers (less of them overall) but they're definitely not pushing that production toward the M3s.

I recall seeing that BMW built something like 100,000 of the M3/M4 F80/82/32 generation between 2015-2020 (4 of those years were F80, all 6 years were F82/83).

With the production cuts in 2021-2023, I would doubt they build anywhere near 100,000 M3/M4 G80/82/83 generation.

That said, it will help if they extend this generation (both G80 and 82/83) all the way through 2027 as has been predicted. 7 years total production with a G80 produced through all of it will boost #s.

Q3 2022 (78k) sales are only a few thousand off Q3 2019 (83k). Why are we not seeing steep discounts and return of invoice pricing yet?

That's why the BMW product road map has no X4 replacement.

They stopped providing those numbers years ago. Now we get overall M numbers, which include M-lite models.
How is BMW going to report the XM, as there isn't a series vehicle to lump the M and M lite units into?

Compare GLE and Cayenne pricing to X5. The X5 is a steal.
Yes MB and Porsche leases are laughable. Relatively speaking, bmw still leases very well, albeit being much more expensive to lease than 2 yrs ago, X5 is still a bargain in the segment. Not to mention better looking (subjective I know) and much better performance. I don't know how MB thinks putting a 4 cyl in the GLE350 is even acceptable.

MB ruined the base model GLE350. Buzzy anemic 4 banger and marshmallow seats and matching mushy suspension. They turned it into a mommy- and granny-wagon.

Sad to see so few Z4 sales, makes it that much less likely to ever get a manual option. It's one of the few things I'd swap my aging 135i for.

Same. I still have about 15 months left on my M340i lease but have some positive equity in it. Trying to convince the wife to let me trade it in and get a Z4. I'm afraid they'll stop making them due to low sales if I wait until the end of my lease.

Because all desirable models and trims are pre-sold prior to arriving at the dealer. Everything now is basically made to order and dealers can charge close to MSRP for each sale. Only way to see steep discounts is when dealers have over 100+ cars in stock and they're desperate for each sale.

Females in particular like sitting up higher as it provides a better view of the road and higher sense of security without the soccer mom stigma of driving a minivan. It's now got to the point where SUV's are viewed as a status symbol. It's kind of a shame really as minivans are far, far better utility vehicles than SUV's. Unfortunately for us car folk I don't see this trend changing as I know my wife would never go back to owning a car as she just likes sitting up higher.

Unsure. These numbers would look very concerning to me if I were at BMW as quite a few new models came out recently, cheap financing is over, and we're likely headed towards a downturn, if not a recession. The only saving grace is the SUV lineup - X5 will get their LCI in '23 where the X3 will have to wait until '24 for their redesign.

2 series sales slumping...

Gee, wonder why?

Lmao... Maybe if repeated this year they'll figure that redesign wasn't something that was broken and needed fixing!

BMW brand beat MB brand in Q3 and YTD 2022 for the NA market. The MB report was released with a whimper and without fanfare.

YTD:
- X5 and X7 each sold better than GLE and GLS.
- GLC however outsold X3 which is surprising to me.
- BMW sedans outsold MB sedans.

MB has a tweener now with the GLB. With GLB+GLC, MB is putting pressure on X3. The GLB has a third row and lower price point, so MB is flanking X3 with feature (third row) and price. It will take time for the market to realize the GLB is a cheap and non-luxury econobox with a dubious engine (it is descended from an engine with piston cracking).

Next gen X3 needs a third row option or X2 needs serious revamping. Otherwise MB will own the compact luxury SUV segment. Even the MQB Tiguan had a third row when refreshed in 2019. X3 is getting long in the tooth already.
