Dyno'd my 2021 Comp today w/ Racechip...

TL;DR
  • Car made 429.9 WHP / 489.5 WTQE (Stock) and 489.7 WHP / 553.2 WTQE (w/ Racechip on Map 7)
  • So, Racechip on Map 7 (in my case) added 59.8 WHP & 63.7 WTQE

The details:
First off, I would like to thank the staff at Bytetronic (https://bytetronik.com/) for doing this and working with me to get the most accurate results. Anyway, I went to have my 2021 M5 Comp dyno’d today and the results were a little disheartening to me, but at least I have them now and know what I’m working with. The conditions were DA @ 2300+/-, 77% humidity @ 75°F, and pulls were done on a Mustang Dyno. I remember from my american car modding days (Corvettes, CTS-Vs, etc.) people hated using a Mustang Dyno due to the results always being lower numbers for HP/TQ than a Dynojet (just google it to see the differences and why). The owner of Bytetronic even told me that when he had his performance shop in California that his neighbor’s shop had two Dynos, a Mustang and a Dynojet. Apparently that shop would do all ECU tuning on the Mustang and when it came time to measure HP/TQ, it would be done on the Dynojet so that the customer’s didn’t freak out about the lower numbers. Pretty significant investment to keep from bruising some egos, but I digress. LOL

Ok, so to start off the guys at Bytetronic were only seeing around 440’ish WHP and that was with my Racechip piggy back on Map 7. I showed them recent Dragy runs with 1/4 results (10.82 ET / 127.82 MPH / DA 2276 / 72°F) and said that would be impossible to achieve those numbers if the car was only producing that much HP/TQ. They tried a 1/4 rolling run on the dyno and noticed that the car shifted at 7100 RPM when in D3 and they had been shifting the car in S3 at 6600 RPM. After figuring this out, they started shifting the car in S3 at 6900 RPM and the numbers started to make a bit more sense. In the end the car made 429.9 WHP / 489.5 WTQE (Stock) and 489.7 WHP / 553.2 WTQE (w/ Racechip on Map 7). I’ve read several articles about how BMW understates the HP on their cars and that their stated HP ratings is what was observed to the wheels. Well that was not the case for me, and my car must have been built on a Friday afternoon at 5 PM ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I have always felt that my 2018 M5 was faster than my 2021 LCI. I could consistently get 7.7s and below on 60-130 runs in my 2018. However, on the exact same stretch of road with very similar DAs and identical mod setups, I’m struggling to get anything less than 8 second runs. Also, my 1/4 trap speed in my 2018 M5 was always 130+, whereas my 2021 is pulling 129 and below, even on a good day with negative DA. What is interesting to me is that my 1/4 ET and 0-60 times are lower in my 2021 by .2 or more in the 1/4 and about the same in 0-60 times.

Appreciate the share, but I’m sure I’m not the only one who’s going to say that those #’s (the stock ones) look borderline ridiculously low. Simple math alone days that the #’s you’re pulling from your drive runs don’t equate to the dyno.

Alternatively, we have a valid delta from you after installing Racechip, so there’s some value to gain from this.

Comparison point: my stage 2 E50 ‘18 M550i did a 3.18 0-60 (shitty ambient, street, and RFTs), an 11.10 quarter, an an 8.89 60-130 (always on the quarter run, never dedicated). Never got the car dynoed, but shaved almost a full second off the quarter and ~.7s off the 0-60. Minor improvements on the 60-130. That all being said, based on the numbers, that car would dyno over 600+ HP/600 tq.

There is NO way you’re doing even a 129 trap if your car is only putting up 430 on the dyno (especially with a ~4400lb car). Mustang dyno is a heartbreaker, but we’re talking substantial differences here.

Once I find a good AWD dyno where I’m located, I’ll give a stock comparison (probably after I stealth PPF it).

Why are you guys looking at the silly numbers that a mustang dyno produces and not instead looking at the delta that the racechip produces?

It's not like it's a superflow or dynapack. I wouldn't worry too much about numbers from an inertial dyno being low.

Nice show. Probably 80HP real world gain from MAP 7. I just bought another for my X5M because of how much I like it on the CS.

Yup, I said the same thing in my post in the F90 FB group...

"Yeah, so assuming my car (with me, random crap that's in it, and a full tank of gas) I'm around 4800 pounds. Given that along with my 1/4 ET and trap speed in similar DA, every calculator that I have found out there puts me at a minimum of 750 HP+ (at the crank). I'm not sure what the drivetrain loss is on these cars, but their estimates for me at the crank were 672 HP / 783 TQ"

"I gave up when they gave me the initial numbers because if my car was producing the numbers that the dyno was telling, then there is no way that I should be achieving the Dragy times I am. In the end, I just wanted to see what the delta was between their stock number and the Racechip. I am pleased with that part of the result as no one has ever posted dyno numbers showing the improvement and by how much with an RC"

RaceChip is working well for you. I had one on my F85 X5M and M5 F90. Putting one on my F95 X5MC when it arrives in May.

I had a similar issue when I put my X3MC on the dyno with RC GTS Black. The stock numbers seemed very low, but the delta on RC Map 7 looked good.

I'm wondering if it has something to do with the Chassis Dyno setting on the car.

ambletx Thank you for the review and spending time to get it dyno.

Just to share, here are the dyno results on F95 X5MC, also on Mustang dyno. It is hard to find AWD DynoJet in this area.

Yes sir. All the car has is Racechip (always on map 7), charcoal delete, and BMC airfilters. I can't wait until tuners can get into the LCI ECU. At that point I'll move on to pipes and TCU & ECU tune. Its plenty quick/fast right now but as with alcohol, you build up a tolerance and what was once enough, no longer is.

xHP is going to be releasing something for our TCUs relatively soon, so something for you to consider on that end.

DA makes a lot of difference in how any turbo car reacts. Simple math.

Also, people don't like to admit it, but some cars are built better than others. Might only be marginally, but it can make a difference.

Sorry man, I'm not buying it. A 7.65 "bone stock" yet you go on to say you were running e30 w/ dinan turbo inlets @ 1500 DA. Couple of things here. Obviously this is not "bone stock" and unless you have a Dragy/VBox screen shot then I call BS. Also, most F90s are in the 8.1-8.3 sec range for 60-130 "stock" in perfect conditions. However, I suppose its possible that you got a ringer out of Dingolfing, but again I'm dubious of your claims without proof.
