Engine start button Question!

I just have a quick question about the engine starter button. What if for some reason the starter button died/ or malfunctioned, how will we start the car???!?

in that case we're pretty much SOL.

However, Im sure that this is one of the parts where they made sure wont fail. Besides, it's just a button. You hit the button to activate the ignition sequence. There's no way the button itself can fail and I doubt the ignition component will fail either.

Famous last words.

The button is a mechanical device; anything mechanical can fail. Moisture can corrode the contacts; vibration can cause a wire to break. Ignition capacitors have been known to short out; sensors fail. I know starter motors can certainly fail as do distributors, both electronic and mechanical. So, I'd avoid making a blanket statement such as "there's no way the <insert component name here> can fail".

When making the statement I was thinking "the button itself is a piece of plastic". It's like the plastic that covers your key fob. It's just a piece of plastic that covers the components inside of it. THe plastic itself cannot fail while the components inside can.

Although I understood your point, I will stand by my statement that I doubt the ignition will fail. We are talking about a new car here; not one that's been driven for 100k miles. Anything after the warranty period can and will fail. Until then I highly doubt that BMW would spend little effort on the ignition components (especially when it's a push button).

+1

However I have noticed that when I let family drive my car, they tend to hold it down like you would when turning a key.

Just pusg and let go. It is a timed function holding it will not make it crank longer.

Agree on the start button issue. No different than the actual keylock we are all used to.

There is excellent medication these days for OCD.

Seriously, I would be worried more about running over a nail than a button.

These buttons go under extensive testing. I mean when the uck was the last time the ucking key ailed on a PC keyboard? Don't ucking worry about it, go have un with your ucking car.

I tried that in my 325i, it won't shut off unless you're in park.

No I don't think you can. But I think you can still open the door and push the passenger out while driving.

Yes the engine will shut off while while the car is in motion ,if you hold the button down long enough. However,if you are stopped,a warning comes on the dash indicating to shift to park before shutting off the engine.

Well if the button fails, there's always BMW assist. They will start it up for you just like in the latest Die Hard movie... HAHAHA...

I am still waiting for some jackass to try that with my car because of the movie...
