Thinking of selling my M5

I am considering selling my M5. Actually trading it towards an X6 M50. I love my car but I do not like the ride so I’m thinking of some thing that rides a little bit smoother hand is a little bit more around town friendly is there any other cars I should be checking out?

So interesting, I went from a new X6 M50 to an 2021 M5 Comp. I like the ride and smoothness of the M5 much better. Definitely take one for a drive.

LCI M5 competition and M5cs (not M5 base) have the M8 competition dampers which apparently makes a big difference. I haven't driven a pre LCI F90 but the LCI F90 is so much more tolerable than my previous F80CS (both lowered).

I find that very interesting even my son says he feels every bump. Granted it’s colder out right now and the tires ride a little harder but even in the summer it’s very hard ride.

19” wheels and tires might help. M550i should ride better. If you do get an SUV, don’t get the biggest wheel option and do look at options such as active anti roll bars and air suspension if available on the SUV you are looking at.

Before you do anything, check your cold tire pressures and make sure they’re set to the normal/comfort pressures listed in the manual. NOT the pressures on the driver door jamb, which are for max rated load and speed.

This corrects about 90% of ride quality complaints on any vehicle.

If you don't wanna feel the bumps get an s class or maybe even an audi bmws always are gonna be stiffer because they're drivers cars focused on performance rather than comfort.

Agreed. I love my M5 Comp, but my S63 has a much smoother ride. Both cars are great in their own ways. But no question when I take a long trip, or have friends riding in back, the S class is better.

Get an X7 M50i. I got my wife a 2022. It’s insanely quiet and the ride is ultra smooth even with 22” rims/tires. The M50i also is damn quick for such a big vehicle. Granted it’s no M5 but sounding like you want out of that realm

I just got a 2022 RS7 after about a 7 month wait. Much better ride which was a requirement from my wife who wouldn't ride in the M5 at all. It's not as fast nor does it handle as well but I knew that. Still fun and way more comfortable.

Jeremy Clarkson said it best: non car people will say the ride isnt very good; but its actually very good indeed.

the average person thinks wafting or not feeling a single crater is the pinnacle of automotive feats

they are passengers. not drivers. i never listen to music when im driving for the fact that i drive, not just ride around unwittingly

As has been discussed many, many, many times before in this forum, "ride comfort" is purely subjective. I agree that given the performance of this car, the ride is really quite good. Turn in is sharp, minimal body roll, and the weight is masked quite well.

But what I liked 30 years ago is not the same for me these days. I have owned multiple M cars starting with an E30 M3, then an E36 M3, followed by an E39 M5, and then the F90. The E36 was by far the most fun and the best handling. I could easily do tail out power slides with complete confidence and control. IMO, the newer cars, although faster, are just not as much fun. With the turbos it's hard to modulate the throttle mid corner and the electric power steering has zero feel so you can never tell what's going on with the front tires.

I had no issues with the ride of any of those prior M cars but now that I'm over 60, I like a softer ride. I'm not saying the ride in M5 is bad at all.

Just my two cents ...
