A/C touch panel cracking

Hi everyone, yesterday I noticed two cracks on my A/C panel. I did not ever hit or even scratch the panel as I use very soft microfibre to clean it. The cracks just showed after a year of using the car. Anyone had the same problem before?

Today I just set up a visit in the dealership this friday and will ask them to do it under warranty. Hope that they will not scratch the interior when replacing this panel, as probably it is not easy to remove it.

I have two lines down the middle of my climate control unit too! I took it in and they agreed it should be replaced but I held off on the repair due to expected invasive replacement.

The cracks showed up less then one month into ownership.

Did the lines go further, like with the windshield cracks or remain the same size as on my photo?

If I remember correctly, this has happened a lot with people who own a 7 series. Lines down the touch screen. If I recall correctly, they were replaced under warranty, but some of the new units had the problem reoccur. If you search the forums for the 7 series, you'll likely find more info on it.

Longing for the old days of fewer fragile electronics .....

The two lines in my case go straight down from top to bottom.

I went out and took this picture to show and in the picture smaller lines up towards the top show up (kind of like yours) but they are not visible when just looking at it.. must be something with my phones camera exposure in night mode.

Never mind the crack line, it is weird that your seats in that screen are white with blue line when you hit the heated seats.
Mine are red with red lines.

Just another food for thought.

Me too. My friend just bought a Q8 and all the haptic buttons would drive me crazy. That and what's in the Panamera.

Replacing the panel is actuall not as complicated as I thought -

As the problem is so popular I hope that they improved the construction of the panel and after the replacement it will not crack again.

Struggling with the same issue and unfortunately I don't have good news. While my dealership happily replaced the panel, three months later I was back to square one, with new cracks starting to appear.

I'm currently on my third panel, which also started to crack after a while. At this point I just stopped caring and saved myself the hassle of going to the dealership and getting it replaced. I think it's only a matter of time before it would crack again anyway, so why bother.

Pretty bummed about it, so I just try not to look in that general direction.

I have bought extended warranty. If it is your third panel the question is how many panels they will replace in 5 years for me It would be cheaper for BMW to improve the panel construction, as probably it is the matter of used to soft glass or something like this. Even the cheapest smartfones screens do not crack like this.

Interesting thing is that in new X5, X6 and 3 and 8 series they resigned from A/C touch pannels. Maybe that was one of the reasons.

I'm not entirely convinced it's the panel itself that's at fault here.

I've been told by my service assistant that they've repeatedly replaced the panel in certain cars. I would assume that if it indeed was the panel's poor quality at fault, BMW's QA department would pick up the slack and introduce a more durable alternative.

My wild guess is that's an assembly issue, perhaps of the fixture or something surrounding the panel that impacts, perhaps by inducing vibrations? No idea, but it seems odd to me, that you either don't get that issue at all, or struggle with it repeatedly.

Yes however inducing vibrations may be also caused by the surface that you are driving on. Maybe this certain cars are used on a worse quality roads than those without a problem . The day when I have noticed the crack I was passing some pretty high speed bumps and it was below zero celcius. But still it is normal use of the car in the city, not any extreme - I was driving maybe 20 km/h. I think that it is a problem with the panel - they could make it resistant with some material which will absorb vibrations. There are no such problems with smartfones which you treat less gentle - they fall from your pocket to the pavement and in many cases survive

Just noticed mine is as well. It only shows up with the red backlight right now, but it will get worse. Hopefully it will be replaced under warranty with something that won't crack.

Has BMW acknowledged this as a construction fault or is it an out of pocket repair if out of warranty?
Incredible that this sort of poor quality/design makes it to production.

Does anyone have a part number for the unit? I can find plenty of used ones for sale for around $200, not very expensive and I'm curious to know what a new one would cost. Would also like to know if the issue has been addressed at all, if it'll just happen again then I'll just consider it a feature of the car.
