M Performance Coilovers Info for M2
Hi there, everyone.
Still waiting for my car to enter production. Feels like an eternity. Good news, however. The press fleet lent me an M2 for about a week so I can remind myself why I purchased it. Driving it this morning I thought the suspension was firm but refined. Curious if anyone has any info/data on the coilovers and how much more stiff it is based on a %. Thank you! |

Long time lurker but figured I'd chime in on this as I am finally picking my M2 up from the performance center on the 10th.
Although my dealer was very firm on MSRP and tried to pull a fast one on my financing by adding points to my rate, I was successful in adding the MPE for dealer cost (port installed). I believe it was just slightly over $3000 all in with the CF tips. |

If you purchase after delivery, there are a few places that discount the parts (getbmwparts.com, BMW of Fairfax, and I think Turner Motorsports). However, shipping may negate that.

Everything is negotiable...
I'm sure I am not to only one to get a break on this. At first the sales manager was "firm" at $200 over dealer cost on each component...reminding him he already was making ~6% on my car at MSRP helped push him to his cost on the parts. |

Haha. I got the diffusor for about $830, no shipping, no tax. From a dealer. But not the one that sold me the car. The stuff is widely discounted and very good quality.

Any particular why you're going M performance coils over 3rd party like KW?
Anyways.... Britney PARTS@STBMW has some deep discounts on OEM merch.

It is my understanding that dealers are suppose to give BMWCCA members a discount on all parts and labor, m performance or not. Might be worth the membership cost for the discount.
Also, my m2 has the coilovers and while I was not given any lituriture on their specs, I can say they ride similar to the stock suspension system when on normal road conditions but brick roads, speed bumps, and hard cornering feels more aggressive. Very well made and livable with.

Did some digging and couldn't find specific % from any BMW-sourced literature. Seems crazy they have all these M Performance Parts with pretty much no collateral. BMW really sucks some times.
IND's site has the kit and claims 40% more stiff than stock. To me that seems crazy, especially driving cars (e.g., Nissan 370Z NISMO, McLaren 570GT) that are 10-15% different than stock and it's a significant change. Went and visited the BMW Manhattan M2 Performance Edition on the floor yesterday and the car definitely sits significantly lower in the front, not so different in the back. Definitely raked, front to rear. |

You also get a discount on the price of the car itself in the form of a rebate. I got $500 off. Catch is that you have to have already been a member for a year for it to work. Not sure if the same stipulation applies to parts/labor.

Any reviews/ comments on how these are? They are available for under $2k (my dealer will install for about $1k) The ability to adjust compression and rebound dampening may result in a better ride than stock on the street and a good setup for the track. With OEM such a deal, why mess with KW and others?

I bought the coilovers on eBay from a BMW dealer for $800 less than my dealer wanted. I had them installed by a "race shop" ( I know that this may not be under warranty but I will fight that later if needed) The reason I had this done is that the final set up for ride height, rake, stiffness and corner balance is best left to mechanics who specialize in this. So in the end, the car rides fine on the street and handles much better on the track. To me, this was the best bang for the buck upgrade yet.

On full soft compression, the suspension rides well. It is definitely not as comfortable as stock, but quite bare able. I would say 15-20% stiffer than stock, which translates to feeling the ridges and bumps on the road? The MP coilovers are manufactured by KW to BMW spec. They utilize the same shock body and parts as the KW V3. I've tried to determine the spring rates, but KW USA does not own that info, nor does anyone I've spoken to at BMW NA. Therefore, if you wanted KW V3's I would consider the MP coilovers first since they are factory bmw parts and can potentially cost less. My only complaint is that these are twin tube shocks, which are less desirable over monotube shocks.
If you are interested in technical data, the KW V3s have 228-328lb(approx) progressive rate front springs and 685lb linear rear springs. Front springs are 235mm x 61mm and rear are 200mm x 61mm. I've spoken with Swift springs about taking the springs to them for dyno testing and finding the correct spring length/rates to replace them with. I'll report back when/if I get the chance.

Thanks much. So stiffer still than stock on full soft. Probably not what I would want to achieve. Thanks for any more input though. They seem direct dealer available for about $1900. That must blow away any KW pricing.

I have the M Performance Suspension (set to default). Unfortunately I haven't tested back to back with standard, but comfort with this setting is marginally harder than standard. But wit better stability and less body roll. If i would go to softest, I think it would be softer than standard dampers?

I drove an M2 on the track at the BMW M track day. It felt very smooth and not harsh, but it was on a track, which makes it very hard to judge. What I did find was that the transition to over steer occurred more quickly and more easily than on the stock car. As expected, the closer you get to a race car, the quicker the transitions are.
