Rear entertainment setup for the nippers

The below setup works well, I tether my phone to the Firestick, so you need a highish data limit or even better is an unlimited plan.

The Firestick was only £30

I also had to get an HDMI extender as the one provided is around 1mm long!

I then tucked the Firestick down the side of the driver's seat. You can still move the seat forward and backward etc and it won't crush it. I also zipptied the cables together but that was overkill, you can just blag stuffing the cables down the side of the seat.

The remote does not need line of sight, so the kids just point it at the screen and it works perfectly.

Few things to note:
  • You can't view HDMI in the front
  • It is best to enable to WiFi tethering on your phone within 30 secs of getting in the car, so the fire will pick it up. If you don't the fire seems to check every minute or so and connect automatically anyway.
  • I used an app on my phone called "Force 4G" - its a good way of making sure when 4G is available you connect to it. You only need 4G for a few minutes and the fire will buffer most shows they are watching in full. I live in the sticks with dire signal and its not had any issues so far.
  • I bought two cheap Sony headphones (£20) on Amazon, but you can get wireless headphones from BMW I think. I don't really fancy trusting my kids with £400 of headphones though!

just a note to say the new M5's don't have HDMI in. They have USB-C so I've ordered a USB-C to HDMI cable to see if it takes input...

Thanks for this little DIY. I finally got around to doing it this afternoon, and it was super easy to get it all setup and configured. Its gonna be great now. The crib midgets will be in the back watching Disney+ while daddy is cruising down the highway.

Good to hear, btw I did end up getting the BMW headphones as they are wireless, the wired headphones did my nut.

I have a 2019 F90 and the vehicle is equiped with a rear entertainment system. I did plug in the firestick via the HDMI port and the USB for the power supply. Nothing happened?

Am I not doing something properly??
