My iPhone X is working fine, but CarPlay is now only free for a year with the 2019 models. BMW is the first mfr. to charge for the service, which will be $80 per year. Obnoxious to be nickeled and dimed on $100K cars

I've been super happy with the wireless Car Play from my iPhone XS Max. No issues, love how easy it is, etc... I play music and use Waze essentially every time I'm in the care, phone stays in my pocket, zero issues.

Does waze give you voice alerts for traffic/cops/whatnot on carplay? I had a 7-series rental with carplay and got waze working fine but the sounds for some reason werent playing. I had the crappy satellite radio going, is it supposed to interrupt that?

I can confirm Waze will come on with nav/traffic/cop alerts regardless of the media you're listening to. Not sure if its necessary, but I always open it up before setting off on my trip to ensure it gives me these alerts.

Frankly I think the Car Play works awesome, I've never had an issue with it. It's a much better interface than Wife's Q7, which requires a corded connect versus BT in the F90.

I think I’ve had to ensure my phone is not on “vibrate” for the Waze audio alerts to come through, but they do come through (regardless of audio source).

Also, to be a little pedantic, the wireless Car Play is actually over WiFi not BT. The phone auto attaches to a special WiFi network (not the in-car hotspot for internet access) and CarPlay works over that. Higher throughput than BT (good for screen mirroring and high quality audio, etc...).

Several times during 1 phone call switching back and forth between phone speakers, and CarPlay,

And also you could click an app and takes 30 seconds before it responds and crashes!

The worst CarPlay application ever

soooma I’m sorry you’re having that experience

. FWIW my experience has been totally different. Zero issues with calls, or apps crashing, or delays, etc... I use CarPlay with Apple Music and Waze every time I get in the car (usually a few times a day) and probably do 7-10 calls through it per week. Never had an issue...

It's not bad. It would be more enjoyable if it was more customizable. For example, maps always defaults to apple maps. Would be nice if the program would default to google or ways depending on your preferences. Also, don't like that it always brings up my text messages in a list and tries to read them when I go to text on my phone. I don't need this feature and want the ability to turn it off.

Wait, what? I just bought a '19 M5 comp and Apple Carplay is only free for a year? Are you sure? No one mentioned it to me (not that I asked).

If that's the case I think that is a terrible decision by BMW. It works fine for me, but I certainly can live without it. Funny how it's free on my 60k Ford Raptor but not my 124k M5C. These kind of practices do not endear me to the brand.

Mention your displeasure in the survey they are likely to send you.

I intend to mention it in my survey. Although mine is a lease and it will end up being cheaper(1st year free,$80ea for the 2nd and 3rd year) than the $300 they changed for it on the'18s.

Thanks for the suggestion. I had not filled out the survey they sent me via email. After I read your idea, I went and filled it out. Let them know my displeasure about brake squeal, no hydraulic steering (I know, I know, but it is a superior steering system) and certainly last but not least, Apple Carplay subscription.

Quibbs, yes they didn't tell me about the charge until the "genius" walked me briefly through the features as I drove it out the door.

Adding to the list of complaints on CarPlay. Finishing up a 5000 mile road trip over the past week. Carplay has crashed at least a dozen times (using wireless connection on iPhone 11 Pro Max, probably more, requiring twice for me to pull off the road and turn the car fully off and restart to get it to function again. Twice it would not recognize my phone despite rebooting my phone and the car and had to delete my phone from the car and re-establish the link. A few times the GPS seems to get “frozen”, on both waze and Apple Maps, might be a fluke and unrelated to CarPlay but haven’t encountered that issue previously outside of CarPlay. One of the more frustrating aspects of CarPlay, independent of BMW, is that mapping apps on the phone move into a CarPlay mode whenever connected. For instance, once a trip has started on google maps or waze, the phone screen only shows a directions list and not a map and you cannot go back to a map view unless you end the trip. Really annoying when you’re a passenger navigating and can’t use the phone interface to move around the map or add stops to the trip which is way more intuitive than trying to do it on the car’s interface.

If BMW or Apple, or whoever is responsible for the constant bugs and crashes could sort that out, it would be a great interface. Pretty sure it’s BMW’s issue though because when I’ve used it on rentals I’ve never had these glitches.
