Well, now you all have convinced me that I should have one. Are the HK audio systems that come in the G80 and F90 the same? Is it possible to order different OEM wheels after purchasing the vehicle in the case there is a model in stock that nearly matches the configuration I would prefer, but doesn’t include the wheels I would select? Is 2023 the last year for the F90 (i.e., will the next 5 series be announced for next year)? Thank you all for sharing your impressions.

Excellent choice!

I can't speak definitely to whether they're the same in every regard, but HK lists the audio system for both as having 16 speakers and 600 watts and Logic7 technology, so they are at least the same in those regards.

BMW (directly, but also many resellers) do sell wheel and tire packages separately that you can of course order, but you will be on the hook for the entire cost out of pocket if purchased post sale (as opposed to say, having your dealer roll it into your lease and residualize it if you're leasing). They're not going to give you a "credit" towards another pair of wheels for the wheels that are on the car if that's what you're asking.

A majority of sources agree that the MY '23 M5 will be the last F90, and likely hybridized for '24 under the G90 designation. Heavily camouflaged photos are circulating out there, as are a few renders on the forum.

EDIT — realized the last paragraph wasn't clear after jnotrom711's post (thanks for clarifying!) hybridized during '24, but may (will?) launch as MY '25. Just like how there was no '17 M5.

When i had my F80 there was no thought of the G80 in mind. My F80 was the current generation at the time. I felt like king shit it……until an F90 would pull up next to me. I felt so small and insignificant. Always wanted an F90. G80 came out. I put my name on the waitlist. Went in the check on a status and an F90 was in the showroom (LCI). Cancelled my order for the G80 and drove 6 hours to another dealership with a CPO pre LCI and took it home. No regrets. The then new LCI was out of my price range so pre LCI was my choice.

We had a 335i back in the day and loved it.

When looking at the M5 we looked at the 3, 4 and 8 series.

Ultimately went with the M5 due to it being the perfect blend of daily usability, comfort and performance.

If I was younger and more interested in a nimble car then I would have most likely opt'd for the M3.

M5 more power, more room, faster, more comfortable executive saloon

I've had 2 f90 M5s and currently a G80 m3 jahre with ccb and carbon buckets. I love idrive 8. It looks and works great. The M3 to me is a more tunable platform and much easier to toss around, much more engaging. If I only had one all rounder I would do the M5. Depends on what's most important.

THIS. I can have ONE spare car. One work car. One track/fun/weekend/toss around car. The M5 does it ALL. If I find something better to track, the M5 becomes a daily. It's like Bruce Jenner, but without the sex change. (although one COULD say he now HAS done it all)

I agree with this comment. I considered both, but the M5 is so much nicer looking compared to that ugly grill on the M3. Also, I decided to get an individual color on the M5, so it will make it look even nicer, especially with the carbon fiber exterior add ons. The M3 drove great, but for the money, the M5 just looks and sounds better to me.

2021 M5C: needed a "family car" early in 2021 and G80 did not exist at the time.

Would have considered AWD G80 if it was available and would have test driven both the M5 and M3. Nonetheless, very happy with the M5C.

Coming from an X3M the V8 is primarily what pulled me to the M5C.

Sounds, torque and power are right where I want it

1. V8 engine. I won't drive cars with fewer than 8 cylinders.

2. Luxury/features. A 3 series is simply not luxurious enough for my taste. I like having the features like comfort massage seats, active cruise, driver assist, etc…

3. Styling. The current M3/4 variant are hideous.

The sound system is the same. The cabin ("room") is different. If you don't know about the importance of the room with audio then please do a quick search. A car is arguably the worst room to listen to audio with all of the glass and of course road noise when underway…

HK, or BW would not deter me one bit from the M5 vs M3, even if the M3 had the best sound system even put in any car ever.

As good as the BW is, HK is ok for what it is. Not great but not bad enough to worry about.

If you wanted different OEM wheels your best bet would be to source some from here or ebay or the like. Thats what I did, my car came with 709m wheels, black, and I really wanted the 789m forged. Found some clean ones picked them up, and sold the 709m to recoup maybe 50% of the cost of the 789m. Or just go pure aftermarket, BBS, HRE, or some of the other forged options out there.

New M5 will be a 2025 model if things hold true to how BMW has done it in the past. With 2024 being no M5, or f90 still (doubtful), but most likely no m5 avail for MY 2024. It is (I think) confirmed to be V8 still with plug in hybrid motor. Around or just north of 650-700HP.

Excellent point on '25 as opposed to '24. Thanks again for clarifying!

Bingo. I have the space/patience for one car for myself right now, and nothing checks as many boxes as the M5. It's the clear winner. Were I to have 2 cars though, an M3 (F80 or earlier for me), would be perfect.

For me, as a two time F90 owner "all the above" that everyone else said is true.
But at the start I really didn't know what I was trying to compare between the M3 and M5 or even really what it was I was truly after. I had BMWs before and loved my old Ms.
However the answer revealed itself the day I got to do multiple back to back driving comparisons between the two. An hour later I realized that for me I wanted the F90 without a doubt. I didn't need it. I had trouble rationalizing. But I can tell you I WANTED IT.
So yeah I could try and put words around it but for me it was the experience and emotion that made it obvious.

No problem, although I don't know this as fact, I believe there was no MY 2004 M5, or MY 2011 M5 (I think?) , and there was no MY 2017 M5 either. So I imagine the same will hold true for the new one, making 2024 the odd year out, and mid-late 2024 calendar year the new M5 being released for sale as a MY 2025.

If history is any indicator, I think you are correct. As you mentioned, there were in fact no '04, '11, or '17 MYs. This seems to be the prevalent timeline for BMW. I think your comment will hold true in the end again!

I would have preferred a g80 for the things I would be doing with the vehicle. Motor is so much better. But my payment was the same as a G80 so figured Id get into this car for the mean time then into a g80 when the market cools down.

The G80 responds so well to mods. My g80 with intakes jb4 and downpipes is running .5 second quicker 60-130 than my f90 with intakes and racechip.

Mostly this, but also the road noise in the 3 series and lack of a luxurious feel for a car that expensive (yeah the noise is part of the feel of the car, but not fun needing to yell to the kids in the back seat).
