I always enjoy his reviews. If I remember correctly in 2018 "Car and Driver" did 2.9 seconds in the base M5 ...

Mat says it handles better than E63s and RS6. But... but... I thought modern BMWs don’t handle well??

Going back to when the E39 M5 came out some reviewers said why spend the money and just get the 540i? I say, I want the ultimate BEAST!

Nobody complains about the handling, it's about the lack of driver engagement e.g. excessive refinement and purposely engineering out any sensations, notably through the steering.

However in the case of the M5 I suppose it makes sense. A blindingly fast car with all the comfort, practicality, and tech one would expect from an executive car. This is a great car.

Yeah, and when I built an M550 similar to my M5 the price delta went negligible at around 12k euro

At what point do these cars become too quick for their own good? The feel of a power rush is amazing, but like Matt says, its hard to use on most roads outside of a track (which a small number of M5 owners will do) and straight aways, but unlike Europe, most states are "limited" legally to 65mph, and this creates high limits for the car. The next M5 is rumored to be electric and have 1000hp, so I guess it seems the horsepower wars will never end.

Yeah it makes little sense to me to continue adding power 90% or more of the buyers will not come close to using. That's why I don't understand this need for tuning such a car. Where are you going to use the extra power?

Very valid question. Apparently, to brag and/or do stoplight racing. There is a "g8x will do sub 10 sec and people would jump on it" thread going on and it's one of the incredibly stupid threads I've seen on Bimmerpost. <facepalm>

I don’t see too many high schoolers driving old M5’s but I do see many soccer moms driving Tesla Model X and Y Performance... oh boy.

Did they fix the limp mode issues on the track? The M5 I tracked at Thermal Club repeatedly went into limp mode as did the others. I had to take cool down laps every so often.

Road & Track did, base in 2018. Car and Driver are usually on the low side wit their testing #s, Road & Track not as much. So I wonder when and if these guys test will it be more like 2.7?

I believe RT and C/D are sister magazines now and use the same data/testing info, although not sure when it started.
