In ideal conditions weight transfer is from front to back (accelerating) so RWD is fine, no matter of engine placement. Sure LaFerrari and other high-performance cars have mid engine setup, but that's not issue here.

Also one thing bugs me, many of you mentioned snow and M5, hell why do you want drive lowered high-performance car on snow in first place?

If i live in snowy place, i would rather look for some real off road car, like Mercedes G, Land Rover etc, not low profile tyre monster.
The problem is not really snow, but ice (at least in built up areas within extreme climates like Quebec) I just got tired of this whole debate and got an x6m...

But! I'm not happy, I wanted DCT and real car dynamics. I hate riding so high.

There are two cars that could make me happy:

M5 xdrive
C63 AMG-S 4matic

Neither exist...

I really hope BMW makes an M5 with optional Xdrive.

As the owner of two RWD cars, besides the 0-10 all out acceleration and driving in really bad weather I don't see enough of a benefit to deal with the weight, cost, added maintenance and repair.
AWD is a wanted option for ppl that live in snow climate.

Benz released the S model which is AWD back in 2014 to current. At least they give an option if u want RWD or AWD which BMW should offer for M5/M6 in the next gen.

Some of us like to drive our cars all year round despite a bit of snow. I just got rid of a 991TT that was probably the best snow car I've ever owned. I slapped a set of Michelin Alpins on and away I went.

It should be AWD period for traction purposes in all conditions. What's the point of all this power when we can't even get it to the ground.

Autocar are reporting the M5 will have the option of either AWD or RWD, with the M550i announced as AWD I guess they have to offer AWD on the M5 to keep it ahead on paper.

You can keep an eye on the next E63 S (4Matic), but I think it's been confirmed the M5 will be available in xDrive
