Aluminum Carbon Structure Dark Interior Trim

I finally saw the “Aluminum Carbon Structure Dark Interior Trim” in person and wasn’t impressed. It looks like a fake carbon fiber-ish trim used in Civic. Even the sales person said the same thing. The latest AMG models use real fine glossy carbon fiber trims that look absolutely gorgeous in person and looks ten times more expensive than the M5 trim. The name “Aluminum Carbon Structure Dark Interior Trim” may sounds pretty fancy but looks dull at best. Why couldn’t BMW just stick to the “normal” carbon fiber trim in M5?

Other BMW M cars offer more "traditional" carbon fiber trims, even the lowest priced M2 has the matte woven-type carbon fiber as standard. Currently M5 is the only M cars that doesn't offer real "carbon fiber" trim. If you don't believe me, just go to bmwusa.com and check for yourself. Not that this is a deal breaker for me but I just wish M5 offers real stuff instead of coming up with a fancy name for just another high-quality plastic trim.

I have the M5. I am aware of its offering, and in fact I have the dark carbon trim. I'm just confused because you didn't really pose a question in this thread, so I'm not sure what you're looking for.

To me, the carbon in that picture above looks more tacky than the current trim offered in the M5.

Just stating the “fact” that M5 is the only M cars that doesn’t offer the real carbon fiber trim, and I wish they did even as an extra cost option. If you guys love the aluminum carbon structure whatever “plastic” trim in your >$100k M5, that’s fine and so be it. If someone thinks the real carbon fiber trim on X6M is “tacky”, well that’s a real first and I guess all other ultra high-end sport cars with carbon fiber trim are tacky too then.

And if for whatever reason BMW-M designers decided to stay away from using real carbon fiber trim on M5, why they are still offering whole bunch of real shiny carbon carbon M-Performance exterior accessory kits on M5?

It's not trying to look like Carbon Fiber. It's dark aluminum trim with a pattern.

Just my opinion. You're completely entitled to have a different one, I'm just pointing out that it seems you only came here to complain, so if you don't like the trim, no one is forcing you to buy the car.

I agree...it's an awkward trim. Almost looks carbon fiber but feels like plastic. I opted to order my trim in piano black although that will be tough to keep clean. Oh well.

You can always wrap the trim in gloss carbon fiber wrap for far cheaper than actual carbon trim pieces which will surely come available soon. I've seen wrap jobs before and they are pretty indistinguishable from the real thing.

In the US at least, the M5 has one of the highest lease to purchase rates in the industry and most are dealer stock cars (not customer order). Because individualization demand is quite low, the business case for offering real CF trim from factory new just isn't there. CF trim is becoming available as a refit from MPerformance (some is already released).

One drawback with the AMG CF trim is it cannot be combined with Wireless Charging which also eliminates the opportunity to have Digital Key (and is something that unfortunately is hidden deep down in fine print).

Just to keep adding...I have an F10 m5 competition with actual carbon fiber trim inside and as soon as I felt the trim on the f90, it just felt gimmicky. It's like a carbon fiber like trim meant for wanna be sports cars which is strange for such a pure performance car. Not the right move in my opinion for the m5.

Gotta agree on the weave trim. Looks and feels cheap on a car of this price. I assume there is or will be a real CF trim available.

I have PB trim on my F10. Griots Speed Shine and thick MF towel does the trick on keeping the trim clean.

Completely agree that the dark carbon trim is very dull and looks like a cheap plastic finish. I'm taking mine back to BMW to check they've ordered it with the right trim as in the brochure and on line configurator pictures it looks black with a black trim piece. In my car it is a light (dull!) grey and with an over shiny silver trim....

We have carbon interior trim in our Q7 and it is really a high quality product, light years away from the cheap plastic trim in my F90....

Looks good to me and has a great tactile feel. And it’s definitely not plastic.

Sounds like you received the std. Aluminum trim, and not the dark version.

carbon fiber interior trim

2021 M5. Salesman told me dash trim is genuine carbon fiber. I'm learning through this forum it is plastic made to look like carbon fiber. Comments are welcome.

It's not CF

Had the dark alum carbon structure in my now sold M5. Prefer real CF over what was in there. CF trim not offered on M5
