Emergency Trunk Release

Been meaning to post this. My M5 experienced a full electronic failure the other month due to a bad ground.

Thankfully im a slim guy, so i managed to crawl through the rear seat pass through to release the rear sets. Who thought of putting the rear seat releases in the trunk is a fool!

However, whilst i was in some weird and wonderful positions, I could not find the emergecy trunk release!! I was so annoyed! Being a Euro spec model, and having a fully electric trunk, I could not for the life of me open the thing! The manual states the release should be in the centre of the trim on the lid.... nope.... all i have is a folable warning triangle, which you can't use if you cant get into the boot!!!

So am i missing something?

This all happened when getting a bottle of whisky from the store.... I'll tell you what, it was the best whisky I've ever had after spending 4 hours waiting for the recovery van to hook up a battery pack to the terminals under the hood!

I usually remove it so the hookers can't get out.

This is something I’ve never thought of regarding cars in other markets as in the US, NHTSA Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards have required manual trunk releases in every new car since 2001, or, in the alternative, a system that would detect the presence of a human in the trunk and automatically unlatch the trunk lid. As Maverik259 and Danny D have pointed out, it’s by the passenger side tail light for our market.

It seems the Euro safety specs do not have such a requirement and that’s why your car doesn’t have it. I was very surprised by this as even a 22 year old economy car with basically no other safety features for the US market would obviously have it.

What’s really incredible to me though is that you got through the pass through to begin with!
