Refinishing Exhaust tips at home

Decided to take on a little project over the weekend, surprised with the results I was able to achieve in under 2 hours of work!

Materials used:

- 1 Can VHT flameproof black
- 1 Can VHT super gloss clear coat
-350 grit sandpaper
-isopropyl alcohol 95%

step 1: wet sand all the tips until the original faded powdercoating came off
step 2: thoroughly wash the tips with soapy water
step 3: prep for paint with alcohol
step 4: lay on a light dust coat
step 5: wait 15 minutes and start laying heavier coats
step 6: after 4-5 color coats on each tip let dry to the touch for 45 minutes
step 7: start laying down super gloss clear coat (light dust coat)
step 8: wait another 15 minutes and start laying heavier coats with 10 minutes between each coat
step 9: VERY IMPORTANT STEP let dry for 30 minutes until next step
step 10: place in tinfoil pan and put into oven at 200F for 30 minutes (required to achieve glossy durable finish)
be sure you have atleast 4-5 coats of clear and 4-5 coats of gloss paint for best results.

hope this helps anyone looking to paint their exhaust tips

attached are some photos of the finished result

Do those look like Burger tips? I got the newer gloss versions as they say it's more high temp resistance, not true and I end used Gyeon Rims on it because of the high temp coating rating. it's already dulling after 200 miles on it. Terrible finish.

Their customer service is crap also, doesn’t return one message. Probably only focuses on the JB4 only

I have noticed this, but also have not tried cleaning my tips. This must have to do with the valves. Maybe if the valves are removed or locked open both tips would be used equally and have the sane finish over time.

I think the valves are automatically open anytime you put your right foot down hard. I recently read a post that said BMW’s valve controller will never fully open the valves, but have not looked into this further.

this is true, they're only open at 80% capacity and go closer to 40% when cruising around. only way to fully open is to unplug or valve controller or get a tune :P
