Who Has Done European Delivery? Advice Needed

Hi Guys,

I did European delivery this fall and on October 5th I dropped my 2019 M5 Competiton at the station in Vienna, Austria for delivery back to the USA. When I picked up my car today I noticed that they put 12 extra miles on the car. My dealer said they were for testing, I don't buy it. For people who know about Euro delivery, how many extra miles should have been put on my car? Thanks

Just a question. How far is the port to your dealer? Did they drive it from the port to your dealer?

The distance from the port to my dealer is 52 miles.

That is what I'm afraid of. Who has done Euro delivery this year, what was your experience with mileage after drop off?

1.5 miles more on my Eurodelivery car. I dropped in Munich though.

It shouldn't have more than a couple of miles from when you dropped it off. Someone went for a joy ride or the dealer let someone test drive your car...

Thanks for the response. It was not my local dealer because I asked him to call me the minute my car hit the showroom.

Relax, it’s 12 miles. Not the end of the world. Willing to bet, this won’t be your last car, so why stress??

I take the break-in process very seriously and someone should not be joyriding in my property for 12 miles. When I signed up for Euro delivery I expected a level of trust and I will be writing BMW of North America ASAP. Also, the 2019 M5 Competition is so extraordinary that it may indeed be my last car.

Hey brother,

Certainly sucks and hopefully you'll get some answers.

Are you assuming it happened in Europe? Is it possible the US Dealer where it was delivered is responsible?

It will be interesting to see if you get an answer and how BMW NA manages this process.

Best of luck.

I had my dealer call me the minute the car hit the dealership. Now, it might have happened at the west coast port of entry.

Have done several but have always dropped off in Munich. I bet the extra miles were done in Europe - have you checked to see if cars have to be driven to another location if dropped off in Vienna? Definitely what dealer says about test drive is silly.

Probably better driver and roads than the 12 mile joyride by my golf club valet guy!

Lots of ED cars come back 10-20 miles up. I remember at some point somebody described the port loading process and depending on the ship you are on, ports you leave from and arrive at, etc it didn't seem that unreasonable. I think I had 4 or 5 miles on mine. I wouldn't stress it.

Spoken like someone who hasn't been able to pull the trigger on a $100k+ vehicle...

I'd be fuming if I were you OP, and I'd be expecting a reasonable answer from BMW.

Shouldn't the car basically go into transportation mode immediately after you dropped it off? I wonder if there is a way to track whether those miles were done in transport mode vs. full power.

If transport mode, I wouldn't worry, as I drove mine for about 30 miles in transport mode and there was no enjoyment to the ride for me (and it was my first time in the vehicle, so I was hoping to fully experience it). No power was available whatsoever, so I doubt any damage could've been done. But, if those 12 miles were done with full power, I'd probably be wanting a really good explanation, or a new car if BMW didn't offer a bulletproof explanation.

I would raise the issue directly with BMW USA and expect them to provide a definitive answer.

I am not stressing over this but 12 miles is not nothing. I just want to know that I do not get penalized if someone took the car out for a hard ride and did not follow the break-in procedure.
