Fan / cool-down question

Even after short, slow rides (quick commutes with kids, etc), once I turn off the engine the engine fan runs noticeably loud, for a few minutes.

Is that normal? I understand it would need it after a highway run, or flooring it a bit, but after a quick, regular commute?

Is that normal?

That's my observation as well. I kinda like it - like getting out of a jet plane (and the perf isn't that far off anyway!)

If you really rag the bollocks off it you can have the fans spinning for 30mins or more!

It is normal. Mine does the same. Even short drives with the engine not fully warmed up yet, after stopping, the fans run for abit before shutting down totally.

The warm air blowing from the fans keeps my feet warm when I exit the car on a cool evening.

I've been wondering about that behavior as well. Glad I'm not the only one!

I have no issues on the fans or even water and oil pumps working to cool down but just concerned on the longevity of the battery. The battery is a lithium one and is pretty pricey.

Totally normal. Sometimes after a "spirited" drive it stays one for a long time!

Interestingly, I noticed during the past couple days that the fan wasn’t kicking-in even after a fairly long drive around town. However, after short drive (only 5 miles) the fan kicked-in when I got home.

I don’t think that there’s any issue with the fan. But, I drop off the car on Monday to have 2 recalls inspected and I plan to mention it to the SA.

I have less than 300 miles on a 2021 M5C. I went for a ride around several highways in Dallas for about 2 hours. Nothing crazy just highway speeds and then service road driving with stop lights closer to home. I monitor oil and water temperatures and no signs of a problem. I do not hear the fans running after I get home and turn the car off. Anyone with a 2021 hear fans running after car is shut off.

Yes, my ‘21 does it, as people above have said, even after a quick crank to move it from outside into the garage.

I like that you described the engine as a nuclear reactor. It seems so to me as well, the power of it.

Like with ANY turbo car, you should do a bit if a warm down if you've thrashed it.
The S63 engine has auxiliary electric water and oil pumps to cool the turbos even when the engine is not running with the main fan on to expel the heat.
Due to the hot V design the turbos get hotter than traditional outside the bank designs.

My Audi S8 did the same. I noticed at times even when my M5 fans stopped i could hear it seemed like the coolant or oil pump still circulating fluid thru the turbos.

+1. After a spirited or long drive, I park it and let it run for another 10 minutes before shutting her off.
