What on earth were BMW thinking?
Featured on BIMMERPOST.com I am just baffled as to why - surely the BMW techs etc all drove it with the p4s - they must have felt the difference the same we all do, why deliver with Pirelli's? I am guessing it was a commercial decision? When I test drove the M5, it had the Pirelli's and I really was thinking twice about the car, every time you put your foot down it was lighting up the rear tires or cutting power for traction - felt all over the place in the corners, and that was in a 20-minute test drive. I am glad I took the gamble, the car is a different animal now. Well on par with my old RS6 for grip etc. I have a post on this forum explaining why I thought the xDrive was so shit compared to the Quattro, it turns out the xDrive is fine, it was just the shite rubber they deliver 70% of these cars on.

There has to be options for supply side issues. In order to satisfy that requirement the secondary vendor will demand a certain amount of production guaranteed.
If this weren't in place and the primary supplier had an issue (factory fire, natural disaster, etc) BMW would have to shut down production possibly for months. Pirelli was probably the least bad option for them. |

Do the 4S s feel any stickier, from the point of picking up little stones, and clattering them in the arches etc ?, my car on Pirelli’s, feels like it’s picking up everything on the road, and firing it into the arches, interesting thread Danny. |

Strangely I have not felt like its picking up stones - do you hear them when driving? I find the f90 pretty much silent when driving, the sound insulation is very good.

On the Pirelli’s, I can hear lots of stones/gravel being picked up,by the tyres, and hitting the insides of the wheel arches. It was from another thread, that said they thought the Pirelli’s were stickier, so just wondered if you had noticed any difference, but sounds like you haven’t. Obviously, it’s probably the different states of the roads we are travelling on that is also making a difference here.

Cars like M5 needs to have tire Treadwear below 200 for better grip.
Specially if the car is tuned

I agree that the Pirellis are super sticky and pick up crap - I have a gravel drive (3/8” bluestone chip) and these Pirellis are picking up all sorts of stone and creating a chatter (Thank god for PPF). Really noticed the difference when I switched over to the winter Michelin Alpin PA4 which pick up very little in comparison.

I made and fitted these to both of my F90 M5s, they are hardly noticeable, and they do seem to work. My latest M5 is black, and they blend in really well.
At their widest, they stick out 1". |
