I've been using a Dell XPS 15 for about 6 months now. Awesome laptop. I'd recommend you check one out at Best Buy. It's small for a 15" because of the tiny bezels. Incredible display and carbon fibers keypad/armrest. Only odd thing I've experienced is a very fast flickering in brightness that I've read is related to one of the bios updates. Got a great deal on it. BB had $200 off and I used $300 in gift cards. I bought the 16GB / 1TB model.

Less than 2 months into having my new HP laptop, it shits the bed. I should have bought another Lenovo. Friday, it turned itself off & won't turn back on. My guess is power supply. So now I have to send it back to HP for them to steal my personal files & data that I have on it.

As a computer addict/IT manager, I'll throw in my two cents about buying laptops in general.

First and foremost buy what makes sense for you. If you've used Windows all your life, and haven't had any serious problems, maybe now isn't the time to switch to Mac, and visa versa. I would also say buy slightly above what you think you need. Nothing is worse than hitting the limits of a computer that is only a couple of months old. No matter what you're buying, don't plan on it being upgrade-able as it is a bigger pain than more people will let on. Sure if you've done it a thousand times it's easy, but if that's the case you probably don't need any of the advice in this thread.

Macs are easy to buy. Pic the right combo of screen size, computing power, storage, and call it a day.

PCs are a little more difficult. Tons of options, folding this way that way, touch capable here, touch capable there, etc etc. Find the features that matter to you and don't compromise. Folding and touching are great if you use them. Personally, I don't care for those features and find them some what gimmicky. You know what's not gimmicky? Battery life, build quality, and screen resolution.

On to PC Brands...
My personal loyalty is to Lenovo right now. I used to be a hardcore Dell fan, but their laptops have been coming up short lately. Build quality and performance have taken a heavy hit in my opinion. I've never been a fan of HP as their hardware never seems to last very long for whatever reason. Maybe this has changed recently, but I'm not confident it is. Lenovo is the perfect combo of build quality, price, and compute power. We purchased a few for our Execs at my company an d I loved them so much I bought one for myself.

Not sure there's a point to this big long post, but maybe it'll help someone!

Agonizing over a Predator 17" G9. 6700/16G/1TB+256SSD/GTX 1070 8G and a MSI GT72VR 120Hz Dominator Pro w/same specs.

Anyone has any experience with either brands?

Couldnt tell any disadvantages about MSI, your choosen notebook is a solid gamer piece.
Would recommend you to check also the ROG-series of ASUS.

I got their box to send it back today after many nightmare calls to their Indian call centers that offer no help and/or can't understand what I'm saying. Furthermore, they expect me to send my laptop in for warranty work with the line of "HP is not responsible for your confidential, proprietary or personal information contained in your product"? No way in hell. They are surely aware of identity theft and the various cases of people's personal files being stolen & posted online, etc, right? Yea, I need a waiver from HP stating that none of my personal files will be opened, viewed, copied, moved, etc.

There's no way any company is going to provide you a waiver (in essence a letter of liability) on your data. If you're that concerned about personal files and data, either encrypt the data or don't save them on the local hard drive. I haven't saved any personal files on any local hard drive for the past 10 years. I either use a USB thumb drive or upload them to my NAS. Operating this way promotes good security habits.

What part of my previous post where I said the laptop no longer turns on did you miss? I can't access the data!

Either way, if they get to be protected, so do I.

I'm just responding to your post about trying to hold HP responsible for your data. Now you realize why it's not a good idea to think about personal data security when you have an IT incident. If the data was that sensitive, you should have encrypted it or kept it off the drive before this happened.

If you choose to do something about the data before sending it in, you can pull the hard drive out of the laptop and connect it to a USB to SATA adapter connected to a working PC to gain access. From there you can either encrypt the data or pull the data off entirely.

I had a SSD failure on my less than a year old XPS 13 a couple of months ago. I had to drop it off at a shop to get it worked on. But because I didn't store any personal data on it, I didn't care what happened to the drive.

It simply needs a power supply. Anyone know where I can buy HP part# 858-021-001 in the US?

What's the model number of the HP? You might be able to get a third party power adapter to work with it.

I have the MSI dominator but with the 980M and its awesome. No complaints. Overclocked both CPU and GPU and it never overheats. IMO if you are going full steam why not go with the one that has 4K screen and the gtx 1080? There's one for $2500 for the 1080 w/o 4k screen

Anyone thinking that these techs don't look at personal files is naive. My friend's brother did it all the time. Anyone recall the recent couple that had a Toyota salesman steal their private video from the guy's phone?

There's also identity theft.

Sadly, the world we live in requires I waste time opening the laptop to pull the HD so that is what I did & now I have to drive to a Fedex place to drop this thing off. F you HP.

After the nonsense I posted before, and then FedEx losing my laptop then finding it, I finally got it back from HP. Unfortunately, not in the same shape I shipped it.

On the repair order it says they reloaded a driver, it had a virus so they reloaded Windows & jagged edges so they replaced the lower case. There were no "jagged edges" and there were no viruses on the computer. A virus won't prevent it from turning on anyway. When I talked to the lady at coporate that I have been dealing with, she also saw they replaced the motherboard.

Replacing the MB would explain the loose MB mounting screws I had to tighten. Also, one of the case screws was rattling around in the box when it arrived and the lid is scratched to hell. I'm not so sure they even sent me my laptop vs some refurb they had sitting around.
