Is it time for BMW to come up with a different name?

Saturday Rant.

My local car dealer here is running adds and showcasing their 50 plus "M" cars on the lot. They are a tiny dealership, but some how have a couple M8s and M5 on the lot. But they are really advertising the "M line" cars and again I feel BMW is diluting the meaning of the "M" cars. So that is where the Competition BULLSHIT comes from. M5 vs M5 Competition is just nonsense. M stickers on every car.....just like Audi with their S-line. My Q7 is an S-line. WOW sports car....Nonsense.

So what shall BMW move to?

BMW 5 Series Monster?
BMW 3 Series, how many doors does it have, Super?
BMW X5 Series Shit-ton-of-power-SUV-without-towing-package?

Does Mercedes have an next level AMG? I have not looked. AMG-SuperDuperByMyCarNowX?

Mike

End Rant.

While you have a point regarding dilution of the "M" designation with a plethora of M models, most non-BMW people don't have a clue what a M vehicle is. But BMW drivers do. Be content in the knowledge that you drive the epitome of M engineering, The guy driving the M550 knows it isn't a M5, and so do you.

Yeah, right about the M550 driver, but the 320d M sport pack driver believes he's got same thing as the rest of the M, M performance, M pack, etc, out there

Funny story to add to your rant, my sister bought a 3 series with an M performance package and they keep call it an M car. This is why BMW marketing works for noobs like them. They think they are driving something special and keep telling everyone that. Knobs turn and then the knobs react left or right depending on the intelligence of the person being told

I agree with the OP. It really bugs the hell out of me that BMW has started putting M badges on everything. M used to mean something, but now it has been watered down.

it does not bother me , but agree that it is getting redundant and ultimately it will lose its effectiveness from a marketing stand point
but other companies do it too ,

It doesn't bother me either. I like marketing....its interesting stuff. I think that's why amg now adds 's' models, and why bmw has 'comp' models, and audi does their thing, etc. They see the positive impact having many 'amg' and 'm' models has on their bottom line. They then add the premium tags on top of their already premium brand, knowing full well most people who buy these cars will buy into the next level (comp, s, platinum/plus, etc) even though for the money, the value just isn't there. you pay another 7-10k for about 1-3k of stuff. They have incredible marketing machines, and they typically win.

Oh and to add some other background, I drove a 1994 325is with M-tech Suspension (predated the next years release of the M3) and the only thing on it inside or out that said M was my New Hampshire License plate "M-Tech" and most people thought it was a medical thing. LOL. I wanted an M car and I saved for it and bought the real dam thing. 1997 M3. No poser mobile.

I get my 2020 M5 back from the shop in a couple of days and the smile on my face will mitigate any "dilution" of the M brand.

Agree, you know what you have. Be happy with it. Not everyone can afford an M5, but having an M badge even if it is not a true "M" I'm sure still has some sort of positive feeling associated with it.

The day after I picked up my M5 comp I pulled into a parking garage right behind an M550 (same color) and end up parking right next to him (no other spaces). He knew what he what he had, and I guarantee you he for sure knew what I had 😆

I know everyone loves their m5.
Some people buy it purely because they love the car. Some people buy it as a status symbol. Some people buy it for both.
I would like to think that I don't care what other people think and that I just bought it because it's a phenomenal car and that I love the performance. That being said, and being truly honest with myself, I don't think I could debadge it 😅😂

Ignore the hype. The M550 is simply a 550i......the E43 AMG is simply a E450 or whatever the highest Benz model was below the real AMG.

People who have a M550i or one of the other M-Performance know darn well it's not an M5. I've had both...it's apples and oranges.

Anyone who cares enough to get one of the M-Performance models know the prices and know the stats on the cars (M Performance cars versus the real M cars). Otherwise, people would just get a 530i.

A SMALL part of me wishes I had gotten the M5 Comp.....but the added power is negligible and I really think the 5 Comp is the one Comp model of all the BMW's that doesn't look as good in white as the standard model does (it's the back bumper messing it up....BMW went way too high up on the rear bumper with the gloss black.....way higher than they go on any other model).

I agree, but mostly because of the hype of having the "best" of the best. But, that said, I love my plain ole' M5, and it has way more power in its base engine than I can regularly use. I'm not drag racing, and the extra ponies in the Comp would just increase the likelihood of me hearing, "Do you know how fast you were going, Sir?"
