M550i H&R lowering springs

I just had these springs installed, and I am not liking how the car drives.

I noticed on the way home immediately on the highway the car felt much more floaty. It is difficult to describe... It was as if it was tracking the lines in the road and doing its own thing and I had to actually counter steer to keep it from steering on it’s own. But not like how when a car is pulling when out of alignment. More like tracking the lines in the road.

My old jeep SRT8 with 315s in the rear was notorious for this, and the X5M I test drove did this as well. I had not noticed this at all in the M5 comp at all until the lowering springs.

I notice myself constantly hugging very close to the far right lines in the road, then ill steer back to the left to try and center it out and then it will float to the left too far and be near the left lines.

It feels like when it is very windy outside, and the wind is blowing your car around left and right. That is the best way to describe it.

My girlfriend was driving home with me in a separate car and I literally called her to ask if she could also feel the wind or if it was windy out but she said no.

On the street all of this isn’t very noticeable except it being about 10% stiffer.

I have not had an alignment yet but I am definitely not happy with how the car drives at all now. Will an alignment fix these issues?

I guess M engineers really got it right with their comp setup / springs... I was excited for the lower more aggressive look but the trade off in handling is not worth it unless needing an alignment is the cause.

Interesting, as it is first negative review that I've seen about these springs on f90, everybody raves how good they are.... I would definitely get an alignment done before coming to any conclusions, and update us once you do.

Lowering springs will give u a decent amount more negative camber if nothing else is adjusted yet. Excess camber is known to make your tires follow road imperfections more.

Sounds like you are having an alignment issue.

We are in LA do have bad roads. And I never had issues with car pulling that hard after lowering.

Not even on X5M with 1.5" drop.

The car steered perfectly straight before the springs. It still steers straight. But it feels like its being blown around in the wind, when its not windy.

I'm worried the driving dynamics of the 550i springs are just crappy.

Odd as there are plenty of people running that setup, including myself, with no issues.

I had an alignment right after having them installed.

I don't recall if you had an alignment done but I would start there.

Steering straight doesnt necessarily mean your alignment is ok. You need to incorporate toe, camber, and caster. All measurements can be off even when lowered and your steering wheel is straight. Your steering can remain straight while the contact patch may have changed. Get the alignment as it appears you might be scrubbing which is toe problems.

I have the M550i springs- no issues except for a great stance and slightly more compression and rebound due to less travel. I drive my car daily over 100 mph in high speed bends no issues.

To pile on to what you’re saying, that toe alignment can absolutely chew up your tires if you leave it unaligned!

+1 - I would be going straight to an alignment shop! Your tires and taking a beating if you are having these driving symptoms.

It is all down to how the installer remove the suspension.
Some do mess around with the alignment bolt.
