Recall: Fuel Level Sensor
I received the recall letter today for my FE. It states:
What could happen "The fuel level sensor in the fuel tank may contact and become stuck against an in-tank fuel line. If this occurs, the fuel gauge in the instrument cluster would display a constant (and larger) amount of fuel than is actually available. This could lead to stalling, and increase the risk of a crash." Has anyone received this letter and had it fixed? Sounds like the car needs to be ripped apart to fix the problem.... at least to get to the gas tank! I don't even want people touching this thing let alone rip it apart. Not good BMW! |

I had this problem in my E46 M3 back in '03. Just be glad there is a recall because that means they have a solution.
When I had the problem they didn't have a clue.

Got the letter yesterday and made an appointment for next week.
I was told it takes an hour to complete so I don't think the car will need to be taken apart. |

Already had this done a week ago. I believe it is a quick fix (probably a couple hours) but my service center was booked up so it took pretty much two business days.

They need to take out the back seat, and then open the area under the seat to get to the gas tank. I'd expect some damage - I have bad experience with dealerships even on much more trivial stuff.

Recall service was done today. Took just under an hour.
They did have to get to the fuel tank but no damage as far as I can tell. Only drawback is the car stinks of gasoline so have to leave the windows open. |

My piece of advice when you bring the car in to do this ( which i did)
Make sure the gas tank is less then 1/4 (which i did, no smell) Otherwise you might have the problem listed above /\ |

I took the FE to dealer for the recall. The mechanic was very appreciative that the tank was pretty much empty. I recommend you do the same to avoid any spillage. The access port to the tank seems to be at a 35-40 degree angle so if the tank is full, it will overflow out. No damage and no ripping of the insulation.
Attached are a couple of pics for your pleasure. Last edited by verdao; 10-11-2018 at 08:49 PM.. |

Just got done doing a 1200 mile rally (which was a blast in the F90 outside of some scary blizzard highway moments) and I am not convinced the sensor recall was done right or if it is the correct fix. I would fill up 6 gallons of fuel at the pump even though my gas level was showing well above 3/4 full. From what I could tell at each fuel stop it was 1-2 gallons off.

I had the recall performed several months ago after experiencing the faulty fuel level readings. All has been fine for the past 2,000 miles until last week when I got an orange CEL. Car is now at the dealer and the code the car is throwing indicates a short in the fuel system electronics. I’ll update when they know/tell me more.

Huh! My CEL turned on last night, but no errors show up in the iDrive system. I wonder if it's related to the emissions data.
