I say to hell with the exclusivity, I'm sick of people trying to make me feel bad for driving an E90 at 19 (I was 16 when I got it) or thinking I'm some kind of spoiled brat.

More seriously though, good front wheel drive cars are still a ton of fun. I would trade my friend for his MkV GTI any day, even at the limit it's different from a rear wheel drive car but is still fun in its own ways. If anyone can make a fun front wheel drive car with nice handling, it's BMW. Even the X5 is fun to drive for crying out loud. Same goes with Porsche, people complained about the Cayenne largely until they first drove one and realized it really does drive like the Porsche of SUVs.

If you care about the exclusivity of the car you're driving or think it makes other people think highly of you I think you're kind of a loser.

Are you kidding me? Wow, BMW really is turning into a pile of garbage run by the bean counters, and the bean counters only, kind of the way Ford ran itself prior to the arrival of Mullaly......

Cheers,

To me this is the most disturbing post in this thread, because none of the member's opinions expressed on this or any other thread, no matter how harsh are NOT hysterics or drama, they are passionate opinions; there are no attacks by one member against another in this thread.

This is an open forum, so I don't see the problem with people expressing very positive, or very negative views. To prevent such expression would seem to fly in the face and the very core of the forums. To limit such opinions would to enter onto a "slippery slope" that I'm sure none of us want to approach.

Cheers,

Really, I don't have much problem - but I would thought having a BMW with FWD will dilute the brand as they did have some marketing campaign about why they stick with RWD for the 1er. So, a BMW made car which has a different brand new will sit better with me.

Having said that, as long as they can have their 50/50 ratio then, why not? I know there are other benefits of RWD, but the world has to move on. Otherwise BMW would still be making planes and motorcycles only.

i love the BMW heritage just because they do not make the FWDs.. and by making the FWDs, they will be ruining the interests of their customers!

I LIKE THE IDEA!
So, that had to be bold, as anyone is so anti-fwd car, let me put down my point:

There is oh so many people who cannot afford a BMW, now they can. I think this is awesome and I cannot wait for the car to come out!

Everybody keep in mind that we are talking about a sub compact with most likely 3 cylinders, not made for racing, slower than a MINI S. A city car. Why is everyone a hater as it comes to expanding the portfolio? I rather have 20 people buy a crappy city BMW than a VW Polo. And no, I do not think it will change the image. BMW is currently spending a furtune to become known as a green car maker. This car will help them!

Amen.

He said, the exclusivity ends in the US, in Europe they are just cars. So by writing this you just confirmed him.

Oh, and that 116i you are talking about is still more money than a 128i stateside.

This car will be sold mainly in Europe...
Last year VW sold only in Germany more than 800.000 cars, mainly polos and golfs... With the money earned they develop a new bugatti, the next murcielago and so on...
Maybe bmw needs more money to develop a proper supersport car! An US customer will never understand the philsophy of small cars, but in Europe these kind of cars are the no.1 on sales...
So let the drama away, u have to understand that bmw is a global seller and the competition becomes harder day by day!

1 question: Why is RWD more expensive than FWD?

I know I like everything I've purchased from them. I also know I won't be purchasing a front drive small car from them. I don't need much more data than that to determine that there's no reason for a hissy fit over what appears to me a very sensible business decision.

Every efficient little front driver they sell equals less presure to make the engine smaller on a 3 series. Wake up and smell the government policy.

What I hear in this thread is a bunch of people crying about "purity" when what they're really upset with is the fact that they have a lot of their own self-image wrapped up in a car brand, so this business move hurts their egos.

Personally, I think the Bangle era of design was a bigger afront to brand purity than a rebadged Mini will ever be. But whatever, sell me a car I like, and what you do with the rest of your time is little of my concern.

Engine/tranny/diff are essentially one integral unit. No drive shaft really needed. You don't need to design the chassis to accommodate for the drive shaft to pass through from the front to the back.

Porche Cayanne saved the company. Without the profits from those idiot trucks they could not have made the cars.

Not everyone drives a car they enshrine as the highlight of their lives.

The price of gas is gonna go up and staying up nites pondering those LED tail light conversion will be a luxury of the past.

Well built fun cars even in FWD that get great mPG will be in demand.

I have driven some nice FWD's and they do a great job.

This may shock some people but there a lots of people that just drive cars to go places!!! Its not a personal statement every time they go to the food market. Some of the wealthiest people I know drive very ordinary cars.
