It was a waste of time trying without LC since you'll easily lose a half second from the absence of quick shift 3 (ZF mode used during launches)—so that was futile.

This is not representative of either my 2019's launch behavior nor my 2020.

On a drag strip, it's also traditional to switch lanes to eliminate differences in road surface. Beyond that or the driver's inexperience with the car, I'm lost. :

Really wish bmw made a software update for this. Happened on my M5 many times with this short shifting after launch. and I even made a thread about it here.....

That M8 in the video even has the Pirellies, and launching well still

Yeah I saw that as well, if it had the p4s it would have really thrashed it!

Looks like the steel brakes (M5) stop just as well as the ceramics (M8).

The inconsistency of the M5's launch sure is disappointing. Are BMW aware of it? Surely must just be a software fix to solve it.

I don't care, I never used launch control.

Autohold and mash the throttle, every time snaps my neck

Launch control is still faster—uses a different type of shifting. Try it.

If your in town that is the perfect way I find, trying to time a launch control to red lights etc is hard in this car as you can build too much boost and she bogs down.

But if your doing a dragy run you will really see how much extra you get with a LC

Note that if you have a 2020 M5, you can still get the special shift mode (QS3 is what I'm told it's called) using MDM + S3 manual shifting (you do have to shift for yourself but you can feel it's the same as full LC). This was not so for my 19 F90. I use this from a light if I decide to get out of there quickly; just ensure you've jammed the brake first, mash the gas and let go of the brake immediately (don't wait for boost) and the shift pattern will surge you into the next gear (as long as you don't hit the redline). It's not quite as fast as full LC but it's close and it takes the launch programming out of the equation.

Exactly, city stoplight, can't bother to synchronise launch with green light, just mash and go; scare the hell of everyone with me in the car

Try that against my approach below and enjoy my vanity plate.

Actually, I'd love to know for sure if the 19s can do what I described below--anyone willing to give it a shot?

Not sure if that that guy knew how to launch the car properly.

Not very sure of what is it that special shift mode, especially if I need to shift myself. What should I expect ?

Yeah, I'm sorry about the headaches you're having getting the performance where it should be--I can understand your frustration.

That said and to lay the disclaimer: I don't think this works on 19s but here's how just in case:

1. Engine Sport+
2. Transmission S3 (manual mode)
3. Traction control in MDM (NOT off completely and leave 4WD alone)
4. As with regular launch control:
--> Left foot brake with enough pressure to hold the car on idle
--> When ready to launch...
-----> increase left foot pressure just like with LC
-----> mash the gas to the floor
-----> but now let the brake go immediately
-----> shift the car MANUALLY when you see say 5500rpm

The launch itself sounds complicated but it's the same as launch control with only two exceptions:

1. don't wait for RPMs and boost
2. shift yourself or you'll bounce off of the limiter

In this mode, I can reliably and consistently nail 2.7s-2.8s 0-60mph times. It's faster to set it up than full LC and works better in sub-optimal traction conditions because you control the shifts.

If you were totally SHITE at prehistoric video games like Defender or Phoenix, don't bother trying this 'cause timing is everything.

Much, much, much faster shifts. Try full launch control first.

The reason you don't know about the special shift mode is because you don't use launch control so you've yet to experience the difference. At the drag strip, LC is quite literally one of the differences between winning and losing--it is MONUMENTALLY faster than standard shifting (monumental, of course, being relative when we're talking about fractions of a second).

You can't change the 4WD mode in MDM, it's always 4WD sport. You can only change it with DSC completely off.

Yes, I'm fun at parties.

That sounds right; I couldn't recall at the time so covered my bases.

Launch control in the M5 is a joke. Far too complicated, and far more gimmicky than useful. I had this bogging and switching to 2nd issue frequently. The trouble with the launch is that if you hold it for too long it just bogs miserably. It takes too much time to setup too, and if you are not with your foot 100% in (touching the kick down) it just does not shift automatically
