Collaboration is the future of automotive product development. It is just getting too expensive to meet the regulatory requirements.

I had to stop reading when they said they may explore a four-door Z model. So we have the 3 series which are generally four door cars, then the 4 series which were supposed to be the coupe versions of the 3 series. But we have the 4 series gran coupe which is pretty much a 3 series. This same dilemma is repeated in relationship between the 5 and 6 series. now they want to potentially explore a four door version of a car that has generally been a convertible? What's next? A four door, sedan version of the X5/6? Or what about a four door i8? Gran coupe i8 sounds excellent. Rolls eyes

I will take one of each, thank you.

delighting and dreading all in one. It is a catch 22; on the one hand it is support of Toyota that will make this ground breaking R&D make commercial sense but it is also the challenge that will have to be dealt with as customers are confronted with a similar product albeit with a different brand.

In Europe, it is not a real threat but elsewhere where Lexus is accepted it could be trouble.

Either way, in my mind this will now give BMW a chassis that can really exploit the drivetrains they do so well. Let's hope the top of the line Z5 can sock it to the AMG GT!

Exactly. The current Z4 feels like a motorboat.

Maybe BMW "i" should take over the Zx models and turn them into hybrid roadsters.
With some trickle-down i8 technology and materials.
Far more interesting than just another heavy 'vert coupe.

All the best.

Won't happen. The AMG GT is has mid-front engine layout, it has dry sump engine, it has transaxle transmission. I don't recall any production BMW ever having dry sump lubrication or transaxle transmission. Toyota on the other hand did that with the LFA, so if they keep that recipe for the FT-1 production car, BMW might also profit from that, and only then it can be a real AMG GT or 911 contender.

Personally, I prefer the classic hatch back design of the Z3 Coupe. I've still held on to my Z3 M Coupe as I know I wont be able to find another in similar condition. I never really liked the Z4 coupe and I feel the same way about this sketch.

Having said that, BMW needs new blood, not the same old customer (since 1999 myself) wanting to buy the same old things. I wish BMW luck with this car.

BMW is the master of weight distribution. Let's not forget that this engine was flat out copied from BMW with the positioning of the turbo chargers. Just because they haven't set the car up in that way doesn't mean they can't find a way to make it even better. That entire engine and all its components aside from the oil lubrication, looks like it was devised from reverse engineering the current su63Tu. Pop that power plant and tranny into a 3500lb car and it will run circles around everything. Too bad Weismann went bankrupt, we could have seen it ðŸ˜*

It's funny how many of you think it looks like a Mustang, because the proportions don't match. The overhangs and wheelbase on the sketch are shorter, plus the seats are nearly sitting on the rear axle. The fastback roof line is the only similarity I see.

Looks more AMG GT/E86 M Coupe than Mustang to me... What's with the pointy hofmeister kink though?

Thank you Chris. The whole point of the JV with Toyota in this project was to make a sports car a viable business case. With the mass and configuration sorted out I think they make something special.

If you can't see the resemblance you've gotta be blind. No offense. In terms of concepts or abstracts, they do look alike.

I choose amateur sketches for a particular reason.
That they have interned or visited specific design studios so that when exercising their creativity they incorporate what they seen.

Here you can see elements from the Vision ConnectedDrive which provides with progress the movement of design language designed to give BMW a more physical and attractive edge in this segment by adapting a similar philosophy to BMWi and create cutting edge engineered and visually arresting sports cars.

Z @ BMW = Future. The new Sports cars embody this perfectly.
