Seriously, who cares.

1M sounds good, M3 to me sounds better. M3 with windows down in a tunnel, even better still.

In the real world civilised people want to hear the engine, but not wake the neighbours and piss them off. Modern car NVH means even sports cars have terrific sound deadenening without some sort of tweaking.

Other cars have a pipe from the engine to the cockpit, M3 has a mic and speakers, it is still from the engine.

If you really want to hear the engine, get a NA convertible, and only drive in tunnels. For the real world active sound is fine, and if you hate it just switch it off.

Anyway, so I have a '06 E90 325i with the N52 and I have a '08 Z4 3.0si Coupe with the N52 (albeit with the 3-stage intake vs. the 325i). The E90 has just sound deadening and the Z4 has the induction tube into the cabin. When I first looked at replacing my E30 with a E46, one of the reasons I waited for the E90 rather than get an E46, was the E46 was too isolated and the engine sound muted. The E90 had more engine noise (close the the E30) and I was glad BMW brought back some "noise" in the cabin. The Z4 in my mind has a bit too much engine noise in the cabin and it gets tiring sometimes (I drive it at 160 mile stints). But the stock exhaust on the Z4 sounds wonderful and in the coupe you can hear the transmission and differential gear whine, which is just wonderful. The sounds (all the sounds) the Z4 makes is one of the attributes of owning one, but I'm glad I can step back into the E90 and the more sedate cabin (yet still hear the real engine soundtrack).

Piped in engine music... just stupid, and OP I feel the same as you.

I will add that the M20 in the E30 325i (is motor) with its solid lifters was a fantastic sounding machine.

A manual transmission can be set to "comfort", "sport", and "track" modes simply by the technique and speed at which you shift it; it doesn't need "modes", modes are for manumatics that try to behave like a real 3-pedal manual transmission. If you can money-shift it, it's a manual transmission. "Yeah, but NO ONE puts an automatic trans shift knob on a manual transmission."

Sorry but you have missed the most current posts. When you say just switch it off, you sound like the Eddie Murphy skit where he says, "F those slave owners...I would've jumped in my Cadillac and told them to kiss my a$$."

This is an old post done at a time when it was very difficult to turn off.

There was no simple method to turn it off 2 years ago or 3 years ago when I posted this. You would disable your stereo and told you void your warranty etc etc. Can you at least understand that point?
We have said that many times in the last week.

Even if you can turn it off, I believe that those of us that pay a premium for these cars deserve real induction noise. It is cheaper to put a mic in than design good induction and exhaust. It has no place in a car of this caliber.

At some point you can play with shades of grey like pipes, etc but once you digitize it, it has crossed the line in my opinion.

BMW claims to be the Ultimate Driving Machine and they acknowledge that sound it important to fulfill that mission statement yet they are doing digital fakery that even some lesser companies don't do. All the BMW apologists and excuse-makers say that it's OK because everyone else does it. So if you do the same as everyone else, how does that make you special or ultimate?


Finally, the E90/E92 sound amazing inside and out but F80/m4 M3 sounds too high pitched and "farty." So I'm not sure which you refer to. Hopefully not the F80 because it really doesn't sound that good.

I recently heard the M2 and it sounds great on the outside and glad BMW made the effort now it would be nice if they dropped the digital fakery and put some effort into the cabin sound. It would be so simple for them to add an option in their idrive system to quickly turn it on or off so if you love it, you can have it and those of us that don't like it could turn it off without coding expense/risk.

I can't even hear that it is fake. My friend that is a real car lover didn't hear it either, not even after I told him it was fake.

It is only a problem in some people's heads.

So go and pay $800 for a fake Designer handbag. If your wife can't tell the difference what does it matter?
