Rough idle and delayed start

New coils plugs and walnut blast.

Noticed problem after walnut blast.

I am thinking injectors or fuel pump. Car is new to me in June. 2009 n54 with 67k. Thanks for any help!

It's Probobly one of the 2, any codes? On mine the issue was hpfp. If you get a long crank along w rough start, look at the hpfp.

What did the old spark plugs look like?

Were any fouled with fuel, if you didn't look, pull out the new spark plugs and look to see if any are fouled with fuel; that would be an indication you have a leaky injector.

Sounds like you need to pull the plugs again and see which injectors may be on the fritz.

They won't replace your HPFP without the appropriate check engine light codes associated with an HPFP failure and since your modded they might not do it all regardless.

Ok. No codes thrown. But hpfp is a recall right? Shouldn't that be done regardless of mods. I am FBO but no meth or upgraded turbos. I could uninstall Cobb and try it?!?!

Yes it should, if it has not been done already, but it probobly has been. Make sure to say 'cranks for a long time'. They won't replace a second time unless you have a code or they are cool.

I just had the car walnut blasted and then this happened right after. Could they have done something to cause it? I have new plugs and coils last month and did blasting to achieve more power. Now it's shaking at idle and barely starting.

When I purchased the car I called BMW and have them my vin to see if turbos were replaced. Tech said nothing has been done to this car from a BMW dealership. So I assume it's all original.

Good Chance I am going to have to purchase the fuel pump I am confused if I should go OEM or an upgrade option. Please help guys. I would rather upgrade if its close to same cost and can offer any benefit performance wise. Thanks!

If I purchase the new injectors do I need to get them coded? Thanks

If your replacing hpfp, get oem/BMW hpfp. If your replacing lpfp, there's a few upgrade options through SteveAZ's site worth considering.
Yes, injectors will need to be coded after install. You can install them and drive the car to a shop to have them coded, but make sure you copy down the values accurately for the shop.

Wow thanks man!!!!!!!!!

I will order purchase OEM fuel pump tomorrow. I really hope that fixes the issues. Injectors are pricey!

I would have a shop install the injectors but I have no clue what you mean by values haha Very new to this game.

This statement is particularly troubling. Vacuum line?

I would really recommend taking logs and evaluating those. Otherwise any advice given in this thread is merely speculation and you may just be throwing money at the problem and hoping it goes away.

Thanks so much Steve. I read a lot over the weekend to learn about the issues I was having and tried calling BMW NA of course everyone was closed. I am hoping my car has recalls active for HPFP, injectors, and software. If so I will hope this will cost nothing and fix my issues. If not maybe they would find the issue.

I do need to learn how to log and if they say I'm on my own then I will have to learn asap.

I expected to replace the Coils, plugs, injectors and fuel pumps as well as a walnut blast as I bought a used N54 that was not modified at all with 60k miles. Seems once you tune these cars issues pop up fast. Weakest link theory.

Hmmm...check your vacuum line connection from the intake manifold to the dv's. I remember one guy had walnut blast done and the shop broke the nipple on the intake manifold and never told him. Check everything the shop would have removed to do the walnut job (cp (ensure oring is present) throttle body, dv's. Did they replace your intake runner orings with brand new ones?

The shop is very well known for exceptional service in this area as an Indy BMW shop. I am thinking it was a coincidence. What would I check the line for? Disconnections or loose connections? Thanks again!

Check for any broken, loose, torn, improperly seated or disconnected lines or connection points. (Holes in braided vacuum lines can be hard to see so move them around some)

If you are running a "Bren" tune....you should be logging and I'm surprised this hasn't already been brought up. They can't tune without logs.

This is good advice...as I pointed out in my post..."vacuum lines?"

I'm sure they are a very good shop but things happen. We're all human and miss or forget things.

1st rule of troubleshooting. When you experience a problem after an intervention, go back and double check your work. We all make mistakes!

This, and when you remove those stock lines, if they are old, they are brittle...and you may not see the cracks in them due to mesh design. It's like $25 to replace them with good silicone lines.

Good luck!
