Someone binned an M5 at the BMW Track Event at PBIR
Highly unusual, apparently, but someone failed to brake on the back straight and sent the M5 well into the tires at T9. When we drove by, it looked like the car was up on top of the tires. The event coordinator said it was the first time it has ever happened at one of the lead-follow events. I'm thinking the driver through they were on the brake, but panicked and hit the gas.
I have a photo. I'll upload and post. View post on imgur.com

You know, I've always thought it was poor taste to post photos of other peoples track incidents. I guess times have changed.

I've said this before and I'll say this again... BMWs events are incredibly fun and well put together but not every person off the street is fit to drive a car on a track... especially not ones this powerful. I was at a BMW M track days event a few years back which was awesome but they paired people and they paired me with an older lady driving the car on a track... I am like... nah, I have no idea who this person is and I am not sure I want to be risking my life here with her.... also the lead / follow type stuff is not a good idea because there is a large gap between skill levels.

Kind of tacky to post somebody else's wreck, especially to jump to conclusions that it was some kind of total rookie error or incompetence. There's a lot of mechanical issues that can also send you off into the tires. Hence the tradition of letting the person who knows why they went off post the pic and explanation, if they want.

This was a BMW marketing event, not an owner track day. There's no way to dox the person who wrecked, because no one knows who anyone is. It's one of those events where you go out in groups of 4 in various BMW models in a lead-follow format at maybe 6/10ths. No specifics were given, but "there were no brakes applied" was mentioned when someone asked.

There is no number on the side of the car. No photos of faces. No date or time of the incident. I'm not sure why the opposition of posting this photo.

When I did the M Track days in 2018 at Monticello they told us they had someone who we missed a braking point and went off track and I believe into a wall/tires, so it definitely happens. Easy to see it happening with the wide range of skill level they let drive the cars, and the speed at which they do. We were hitting 135+ in the M5's by ourselves, so I could see someone with less driving skills getting in over their head

This stuff happens. Heck. I lost the rear end at a BMW event (lead follow lapping) at the Nurburgring a couple years ago and crashed an m4 coming out of Mutkerve at about 100 mph. Track was just getting wet and cold and got on the gas a bit too early. BMW could not have cared less once they realized I didn't fiddle with the traction control plus we aren't talking about a totaled car but there was damage for sure. They picked the car up and gave us another one. We couldn't believe it. You can bet I was careful the next day lapping in full on rain and was slow as can be.

Everyone's too sensitive these days. It's awareness. Noones posting info on the driver or humiliating. It's a wreck. It happens (as long as he wasn't being stupid). If you can't handle it get off the track.
