I miss the E39 and E60.
What would you suggest they do? Make a smaller and lighter car with less power? Oh wait that's right, that's what the M3 is for. They will continue to make the cars heavier and with more power because the competition is doing the same and because people are willing to pay out big money for it.

The future doesn't look great for lighter cars either because with electric cars comes heavy batteries. Bottom line though people will pay big money for those heavy vehicles also.

I understand the business rationale but I still don't like it.

That's the beauty of it. It can be a 530, 540, 550 and M5 all in one.

But I agree with you. The horsepower wars are ridiculous. Who uses 600+ HP safely in public roads? Who often drives at triple digits speeds in countries with decaying road infrastructure and speed limits galore like the US or U.K.?

30 years ago, an E34 M5 had a 0-60 time of 6 seconds flat and barely 300HP. That was the fastest sedan in the world in the early 90s...

I believe the beauty of M cars of yesteryear was the balance and prowess of their performance and driving dynamics. 30 years ago, an E34 M5 took 6 seconds flat to reach 60MPH and the engine made 311HP. It was considered the fastest best driving sedan in the world in the early 1990s.

I get the business rationale behind the present day horsepower wars but don't understand the need or the logic. A car that is insanely fast and powerful and can not be enjoyed in countries littered with speed cams, cops and decaying roads.

Totally understand your point.
In the beginning I used to love and appreciate the fact that the F90 was a 530i when I put into Quiet mode, Efficiency and everything Comfort. Now I just think it is boring. It doesn't feel special unless I am pushing it 10/10, but I only get to do for 3s, about 2 or 3 times when I am driving the car.

M5 is an awesome car, but it already looks dated and no mod will be able to fix this fact. In contrast, RS6/RS7 look sharp, sporty and aggro. They are a bit slower than M5 but I believe this can be easily fixed. Just changing those massive heavy wheels should help a lot.

Audi definitely looks the part. Just disappointing that a brand-new model needs a tune just to keep up with the other players.

Hoping there will the "performance" versions coming to offset... either way I dont think Ill miss the lesser hp if the drive is worth it. Thats why Im still looking at the GT63S- well on hold until all this other shit boils over.

Configurator is up for US RS6... It adds up quickly. Basically $120k for my build and I like the basic "little" wheels

I wonder if Audi will be charging markups for the RS6, as well as if they are planning on only making a limited number of production units or doing order only similar to the E63S.

The M5 and RS6 might be competitors in the sense that they are bidding for the attention of the same customer but they are completely different cars as to how they behave, the RS6 is by far the better daily driver, it's got the comfort, usability of the estate and the way Audi configures it’s quattro system makes it easier to drive quickly......... but ultimately the M5 is the quickly machine everywhere be that on the straights or in the corners.

If you want the best performance car of the two you buy the M5 Comp but if you want the best allrounder you buy the RS6 and I'm willing to bet that it will be the one of the two which will command the most money come resale time too.
